{"id":227989,"date":"2022-11-09T17:53:35","date_gmt":"2022-11-09T16:53:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=227989"},"modified":"2022-11-09T17:53:35","modified_gmt":"2022-11-09T16:53:35","slug":"uk-nurses-to-embark-on-strike-over-pay","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/09\/uk-nurses-to-embark-on-strike-over-pay\/","title":{"rendered":"UK nurses to embark on strike over pay"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>British nurses will strike over pay, the Royal College of Nursing said on Wednesday, announcing the first UK-wide strike action in the union\u2019s 106-year history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cResults of our biggest ever strike ballot show record numbers of nursing staff are prepared to join picket lines this winter,\u201d it said.<\/p>\n<p>Britain\u2019s health minister, Steve Barclay, described the decision as \u201cdisappointing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The move comes amid a cost-of-living crisis that the union says has left its members struggling to feed their families and pay their bills.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is a defining moment in our history, and our fight will continue through strike action and beyond for as long as it takes to win justice for the nursing profession and our patients,\u201d RCN General Secretary Pat Cullen said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnger has become action \u2013 our members are saying enough is enough,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>The industrial action is expected to begin before the end of the year, with dates to be announced soon.<\/p>\n<p>The RCN is calling for a pay rise of five percent above inflation.<\/p>\n<p>Recent months have seen a wave of industrial action in the UK.<\/p>\n<p>Tens of thousands of staff in various industries \u2013 from the postal and legal systems to ports and telecommunications \u2013 have gone one <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/09\/court-strikes-out-apc-suit-seeking-to-disqualify-pdp-governorship-candidate-in-rivers\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">strike<\/a> across Britain since the summer.<\/p>\n<p>The RCN says there are currently record nursing vacancies, with 25,000 staff leaving the Nursing and Midwifery Council register last year.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>British nurses will strike over pay, the Royal College of Nursing said on Wednesday, announcing the first UK-wide strike action in the union\u2019s 106-year history. \u201cResults of our biggest ever strike ballot show record numbers of nursing staff are prepared to join picket lines this winter,\u201d it said.
