Thousands of public workers in South Africa downed tools on Thursday in a nationwide strike over wages after talks with the government hit a deadlock \u2014 threatening to affect essential services.<\/p>\n

The work stoppage was led by one of South Africa\u2019s largest labour unions, the Public Servants Association (PSA), which has more than 235,000 members.<\/p>\n

The wage stalemate between the government and its employees escalated after Labour Minister Thulas Nxesi last week declared he would unilaterally implement a three percent increase across the board.<\/p>\n

Unions want a 6.5 percent hike.<\/p>\n

Union members including nurses, immigration workers and some police officers picketed outside the Treasury office in Pretoria waving black placards reading \u201cpublic servants are bleeding\u201d.<\/p>\n

The PSA had warned on Wednesday that the strike<\/a> would \u201chave a serious impact\u201d on the home affairs, transport and border control departments.<\/p>\n

It said the minister\u2019s \u201cirresponsible action has further damaged the already fragile relations and severe trust deficit\u201d between the government and unions.<\/p>\n

Finance Minister Enoch Godongwana said during his October mini-budget speech that government could only afford an average wage increase of 3.3 percent.<\/p>\n

The increase weighs below South Africa\u2019s inflation which peaked at 7.8 percent in July.<\/p>\n
