{"id":228364,"date":"2022-11-11T09:12:14","date_gmt":"2022-11-11T08:12:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=228364"},"modified":"2022-11-11T09:12:14","modified_gmt":"2022-11-11T08:12:14","slug":"ekedc-energy-theft-responsible-for-crazy-bills-in-some-communities","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/11\/ekedc-energy-theft-responsible-for-crazy-bills-in-some-communities\/","title":{"rendered":"EKEDC: Energy theft responsible for &#8216;crazy bills&#8217; in some communities"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has stated that the\u00a0act of bypassing electricity meters was responsible for estimated billing, otherwise known as \u201ccrazy bill\u201d in most communities.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Thursday by\u00a0Tinuade Sanda, managing director, EKEDC at a customer engagement forum organised by the Disco in Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>According to NAN, customers present at the forum were from the Orile district, Surulere, Aguda, Coker, Orile, Ikate, Animashaun and Doyin zones.<\/p>\n<p>Sanda said the town hall meeting was an avenue to interface with <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/22\/our-customers-are-number-one-priority-nafdac\/\">customers<\/a> and address issues confronting communities under EKEDC\u2019s network.<\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Sanda was represented by Joseph Ezenwa, chief finance officer, EKEDC said the essence of the meeting was to collaborate with customers.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She also said estimated billing was a product of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/28\/uk-firm-set-to-address-energy-theft-in-nigeria\/\">energy theft<\/a> within a community, which included bypassing electricity meters.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to her, the act of bypassing electricity meters is one of the major causes of estimated billing.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cAs a company, we bill accurately based on consumption on every feeder, while we also discovered that some customers engage in energy theft within the communities,\u201d she said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThere is a need for every customer to be vigilant to identify those engaging in energy theft in the communities.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On metering, Sanda further said the company would commence the installation of meters on poles to curb energy theft and bypass meters within its network.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She also said the company had commenced effective metering through the Meter Asset Provider (MAP) scheme, where meters would be installed within 10 working days after confirmation of payment.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She urged customers to key into the MAP scheme as a way of addressing estimated billings.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She added that the company had installed over 78,000 free meters under the National Mass Metering Programme (NMMP) Phase 0 Scheme.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">According to her, \u201cthe NMMP is an initiative of the Federal Government, where meters are provided to customers for free, and the goal of the initiative is to meter all customers within five years (2025)\u201d.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">She said the NMMP had been suspended, hence Phase 1 of the programme was yet to commence.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cPending when it commences, l urge you to key into the ongoing MAP scheme; all is to eliminate estimated billing and bridge the metering gap,\u201d she added.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u201cThe more customers that participate in the scheme, the better our chances of metering all customers.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">\u00a0The EKEDC boss said the company had bought over 120,000 transformers to improve supply and had commenced installation.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">On his part, Femi Bakare, former secretary general of Itire\/lkate community development area, commended EKEDC\u2019s prompt response to faults and customer service.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span data-preserver-spaces=\"true\">Bakare said the problems confronting electricity customers were enormous, but the meeting created an avenue for peaceful discussion and how they could be addressed.<\/span><\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Eko Electricity Distribution Company (EKEDC) has stated that the\u00a0act of bypassing electricity meters was responsible for estimated billing, otherwise known as \u201ccrazy bill\u201d in most communities.
