{"id":229200,"date":"2022-11-18T05:52:21","date_gmt":"2022-11-18T04:52:21","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=229200"},"modified":"2022-11-18T05:52:21","modified_gmt":"2022-11-18T04:52:21","slug":"asuu-to-fg-pay-withheld-salaries-or-else","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/18\/asuu-to-fg-pay-withheld-salaries-or-else\/","title":{"rendered":"ASUU to FG: Pay withheld salaries or else&#8230;"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the federal government to pay the withheld salaries of their members. <\/p>\n<p>Members of the union at the Olabisi Onabanjo University (OOU) Ago-Iwoye made the call yesterday during a public demonstration. <\/p>\n<p>They asked the FG to pay their counterparts in federal universities or risk actions that are inimical to the academic calendar and education of the students. <\/p>\n<p>The lecturers, who were led by the branch Chairman, Dr. Joel Okewale, decried what they described as \u201cbrazen show of disdain for education and the intelligentsia\u201d by the federal government.<\/p>\n<p>They expressed worries that the government had stepped up its anti- people and oppressive stance by criminalizing strike action and implementing its \u2018no-work-no-pay\u2019 on ASUU.<\/p>\n<p>Okewale who addressed the rally, said government\u2019s self-determined <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/16\/asuu-no-work-no-pay-fg-insists\/\">policy of \u2018no-work-no-pay\u2019<\/a> as well as criminalization of strike action, is alien to the university system.<\/p>\n<p>He added that they would not be forced to take the \u2018no-pay-no-work\u2019 decision and still be expected to complete the 2020\/21 academic session, which the the government opted not to pay for.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cwe would not be forced to take the \u2018no-pay-no-work\u2019 decision and still be expected to complete the 2020\/21 session, which government opted not to pay for.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would not add to the punishment being handed down to the Nigerian children by government\u2019s refusal to adequately educate them in order to be fully prepared for the challenges of nation building\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur union finds it most uncharitable and an utter betrayal of the Nigerian nation, going by the taxpayers\u2019 money spent on the education of this crop of politicians and the entire ruling class that they represent\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe commiserate with the Labour Minister, Chris Ngige, who turned from a mediator to a prosecutor just to be the servile face of the ruling elite in their efforts to keep the Nigerian masses uneducated or poorly educated and perpetually enslaved in their own country\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also equally commiserate with his collaborators in and outside government for their different roles in this struggle.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPosterity would fish all of them out for their excrescences in no distant future. Nonetheless, our union, ASUU, remains committed to the ongoing struggle against the casualization of academic appointments.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe would not relent until the poor budgetary expenditure to education is reversed and our universities are put on the pedestal for global reckoning\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are also committed to the struggle to liberate our country from the grip of neo-liberal organizations and their opportunistic collaborators in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also use the opportunity to call on federal and state governments to review their present poor funding of education and invest in our children for the sake of our country,\u201d Okewale said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Academic Staff Union of Universities (ASUU) has called on the federal government to pay the withheld salaries of their members.
