{"id":229456,"date":"2022-11-19T06:58:07","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T05:58:07","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=229456"},"modified":"2022-11-19T06:58:07","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T05:58:07","slug":"social-investment-programmes-not-solution-to-poverty-says-seun-onigbinde","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/19\/social-investment-programmes-not-solution-to-poverty-says-seun-onigbinde\/","title":{"rendered":"Social investment programmes not solution to poverty, says Seun Onigbinde"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Director and co-founder of BudgIT, Seun Onigbinde has stated that the social investment programmes of the Federal government are not a &#8216;ticket out of poverty&#8221;.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Friday by\u00a0Onigbinde during an interview on Channels Television.<\/p>\n<p>The National Bureau of Statistics (NBS) on Thursday in its\u00a0latest national multidimensional <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/18\/i-will-lift-130m-nigerians-out-of-poverty-peter-obi\/\">poverty<\/a> index report, said 133 million Nigerians are multidimensionally poor.<\/p>\n<p>According to the report, 65 percent of poor people in the country live in the northern part of the country, while nearly 47 million live in the south.<\/p>\n<p>Over the past years, the federal government under President Muhammadu Buhari has initiated social investment programmes, which include cash transfer, school feeding scheme, and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/07\/police-nab-soldier-for-stabbing-abia-trader-to-death\/\">TraderMoni<\/a>, as part of efforts to tackle poverty.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking during the interview, Onigbinde said social investment programmes cannot solely address the problem of poverty in the country.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere are two problems. One, I have not seen a coherent evaluation or assessment of those plans (referring to social investment programmes),\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is a problem. It is a bit shocking. If you look at the 2023 budget, around N350 billion, almost the same size with capital investments on roads, is what we are investing in social investment under the humanitarian ministry.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat ministry did not even exist five or six years ago. My own big idea is that if you are putting N350 billion in a programme or even up to N500 billion in some instances, by the time you put the recurrent side to it, what is the impact you are getting from it?<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are not even assessing the programmes as we should. It is just typical of Nigeria \u2014 spend the money \u2014 and nobody is given the rigour on the impact of the money.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSecond, that is not a ticket out of poverty. Most of these things are add-on.
