{"id":229483,"date":"2022-11-19T13:30:14","date_gmt":"2022-11-19T12:30:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=229483"},"modified":"2022-11-19T13:30:14","modified_gmt":"2022-11-19T12:30:14","slug":"police-rescue-17-year-old-girl-locked-up-by-aunt-in-jos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/19\/police-rescue-17-year-old-girl-locked-up-by-aunt-in-jos\/","title":{"rendered":"Police rescue 17-year-old girl &#8216;locked up by aunt&#8217; in Jos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Police in Plateau State has rescued a 17-year-old girl reportedly locked up by her aunt in Jos.<\/p>\n<p>According to NAN, Grace Pam, National Human Rights Commission (NHRC) coordinator in Plateau, said the girl was rescued in Rikkos area of Jos North LGA.<\/p>\n<p>Pam said the victim was brought to live with her aunt after her grandmother, who was taking care of her, became sick.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe commission received information from an anonymous complainant that the girl was locked up on the balcony of a house by her aunt,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe was living with her grandmother before she came to the aunt\u2019s house, because the grandmother took ill and could not continue to care for her.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe complainant alleged that the aunt travelled for close to a week and left the girl without food.<\/p>\n<p>\u201c<a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/15\/buhari-decries-murder-of-imo-monarch-orders-investigation\/\">Investigation<\/a> revealed that the girl was truly malnourished and had scars on her hands, neck, and other parts of her body. The marks resulted from incessant beatings she received from her aunt.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe matter was reported to the police where the aunt\u2019s statement was taken upon return from her trip.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe girl has been provided with temporary shelter until she recovers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe also found out that the orphan girl was never allowed to go out, but was locked up in the house and not fed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cShe has been taken to hospital by one of our partners to ensure proper medical care.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The NHCR coordinator expressed concern over the recent surge in cases of assault against minors, adding that \u201cas we speak, there is a case of another victim, a nine-year-old girl, who came to stay with her aunt barely two months ago\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe had to rescue her on Thursday from her aunt; she beats her mercilessly, but thank God, she did not get her blind but got her injured in the eye,\u201d she added.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe took her to the hospital on Friday with scars resulting from serous beating.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhen our staff went there, she was locked up in a zinc house where the aunt keeps her goats.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe girl is looking forward to going back to her parents.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>Police in Plateau State has rescued a 17-year-old girl reportedly locked up by her aunt in Jos.
