{"id":229826,"date":"2022-11-21T06:21:20","date_gmt":"2022-11-21T05:21:20","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=229826"},"modified":"2022-11-21T06:21:20","modified_gmt":"2022-11-21T05:21:20","slug":"removal-of-history-from-schools-curriculum-can-never-memories-of-baifra-says-soyinka","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/11\/21\/removal-of-history-from-schools-curriculum-can-never-memories-of-baifra-says-soyinka\/","title":{"rendered":"Removal of history from schools curriculum can never memories of Baifra, says Soyinka"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Nobel laureate, Wole Soyinka has stated that removing history from the Nigerian education curriculum can not erase memories of the Baifran war.<\/p>\n<p>This was stated on Sunday by Soyinka while speaking at the 24th edition of the Lagos Book and Arts Festival organised by Book Kraft.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that federal government had removed history studies from primary and secondary schools\u2019 curriculums from the 2009\/2010 academic session.<\/p>\n<p>In 2019, the government however ordered the reintroduction of the subject.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">Speaking about the role of memory in keeping historical experiences, the<\/span>\u00a0Nobel laureate said the memories of the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/31\/concerns-raised-as-ipob-members-enforces-biafran-flag-on-schools-in-enugu-community\/\">Biafran<\/a> agitation can never be wiped away from the people.<\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cCollective memory is the key because it is that memory which is related to the mechanisms of relating reality to whatever narrative is given to us. It is far more important and it is more dangerous because you can get trapped in it because it is collected as a community activity and some of that I think is happening to us here in Nigeria,\u201d he said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cI\u2019m referring of course to Biafra.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cThe collective memory there is very strong, even before the war, I warned that this collective memory might remain to plague efforts at nation being and that therefore, everything should be done to avoid that war.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cWhen I use expressions like, Biafra can never be defeated can never be wiped away, people thought I was talking about just the battlefield.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cI was talking about, a notion, a passion which enters the collective memory in active life not just as a past narrative. this is what I was warning against. And we\u2019re seeing it today.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cGovernments sometimes think that by undertaking the criminal act of removing history from schools, something which I never believed could ever happen to us. The government actually stopped teaching of history in schools.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cSo naive, so stupid as not to recognise that there is something called memory, collective memory, active memory in the present.\u00a0<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cIf the purpose was to obliterate the war or memories of the war, what about events that led up to the war? What about the position, the narrative of existence in relation to the outer world how do you obliterate for heaven\u2019s sake?<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cYet people sat down and went about their business when they removed history from the curriculum.<\/span><\/p>\n<p><span class=\"acssf62a8\">\u201cThat\u2019s what I mean by saying that we must always adjudicate the present by history, by the collective memory.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>\u201cAt the same time, however, we must take care not to become prisoners of that collective memory.
