An Indian man has burned himself to death in protest at what he called New Delhi\u2019s attempts to impose nationwide usage of Hindi.<\/p>\n

Police said the octogenarian killed himself in the southern part of the country while protesting the imposition of Hindi, a language mostly spoken in the north.<\/p>\n

According to\u00a0 AFP, language is an emotive issue in India where hundreds of languages and dialects are spoken, but English serves as the main official medium while state governments use regional languages.<\/p>\n

The 2011 census revealed that fewer than half of Indian citizens speak Hindi<\/a> \u2013 just under 44 percent.<\/p>\n

But last month a group of parliamentarians headed by the powerful interior minister Amit Shah reportedly recommended making Hindi the national official language, including for technical education such as medicine and engineering.<\/p>\n

Hindu nationalist Prime Minister Narendra Modi has spoken of a \u201cslave mentality\u201d around the use of English, and promoted the use of Indian languages.<\/p>\n

But opponents accuse his government of attempting to impose Hindi, causing particular anger in the south.<\/p>\n

Most southern Indian languages are Dravidian, a completely different language family to the Indo-European group which includes Hindi.<\/p>\n

A 85-year-old farmer in the southern state of Tamil Nadu,\u00a0 MV Thangavel doused himself in petrol and kerosene and set himself alight, police said.<\/p>\n

He was holding a Tamil-language placard reading: \u201cModi government stop imposing Hindi. Why do we need to choose Hindi over our literature-rich Tamil\u2026 it will affect future of our youth.\u201d<\/p>\n

Senthil, a police officer who uses only one name, told AFP that Thangavel had killed himself.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe wrote the banner against central government,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n

Thangavel carried out his protest on Saturday outside an office in Salem of Tamil Nadu\u2019s ruling DMK party, of which he was a member.<\/p>\n

Party leader MK Stalin \u2014 who has criticised the Modi government\u2019s language policies \u2014 offered condolences to Thangavel\u2019s family but urged others to avoid such extreme protests.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe must not lose another life,\u201d reports quoted him as saying, condemning the central government\u2019s \u201cdomineering attitude\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cLet\u2019s continue to fight against the imposition of Hindi politically, democratically,\u201d he said. \u201cDon\u2019t let narrow-mindedness spoil a beautiful country of diversity.\u201d<\/p>\n

The subject is a long-running political issue \u2014 the then ruling Congress party sought to make Hindi the official national language in the 1960s, causing enduring resentment in southern India.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
