{"id":235272,"date":"2022-12-15T13:35:34","date_gmt":"2022-12-15T12:35:34","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=235272"},"modified":"2022-12-15T13:35:34","modified_gmt":"2022-12-15T12:35:34","slug":"u-s-florida-pastor-pastor-and-son-arrested-for-allegedly-using-churchs-covid-loan-to-buy-3-7m-mansion","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/12\/15\/u-s-florida-pastor-pastor-and-son-arrested-for-allegedly-using-churchs-covid-loan-to-buy-3-7m-mansion\/","title":{"rendered":"U.S: Florida pastor pastor and son arrested for allegedly using church\u2019s COVID loan to buy $3.7m mansion"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Florida pastor, Evan Edwards and his son, Josh, have been arrested for fraudulently obtaining $8.4 million in COVID relief funds and using most of it to purchase of a luxury mansion on Disney World property in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>According to NBC News, Evan, president and Josh, vice president of the so-called ASLAN International Ministry \u2014 were taken into federal custody from their family home in New Smyrna Beach.<\/p>\n<p>The arrest came after the Edwards\u2019 Paycheck Protection Program funds were seized by the Secret Service way back in April 2020 after the feds suspected their family ministry was bogus.<\/p>\n<p>Josh applied for the loan in April 2020, claiming his family\u2019s religious nonprofit ASLAN had 486 employees and a $2.7 million monthly payroll, according to a federal forfeiture complaint.<\/p>\n<p>ASLAN\u2019s actual number of employees and payroll expenses were &#8220;significantly lower, or entirely nonexistent,&#8221; the indictment states.<\/p>\n<p>Though they asked for $6 million, the family ministry \u2014 which also appointed Evan\u2019s daughter, Joy Edwards, as secretary \u2014 was approved for a whopping $8,417,261.38 the following month.<\/p>\n<p>The Edwards then allegedly moved the funds across various bank accounts linked to members of their family, feds said.<\/p>\n<p>About $868,250 was sent to a Royal Bank of Canada account in Evan\u2019s wife Mary Janes Edward\u2019s name before it was used to purchase a $3.7 million 4,700-square-foot <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/27\/us-seizes-ex-gambian-president-yahya-jammehs-mansion\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">mansion<\/a> on Orlando\u2019s Symphony Grove Drive, a property that is part of Disney World\u2019s Golden Oak development, according to the feds.<\/p>\n<p>Federal officials visited the New Smyrna Beach home in September 2020 to find the house cleared out.<\/p>\n<p>The next day, Florida police stopped a car for speeding to find all four Edwards members inside with luggage and apparent evidence of their schemes, though they claimed they were going to a conference in Texas, according to past federal court filing.<\/p>\n<p>NY Post reported that the family, originally from Canada, was taken into custody on an immigration charge but was released the next day.<\/p>\n<p>Following orders from a judge, the Edwards returned the $8.4 million in its entirety in April 2021.<\/p>\n<p>Evan and Josh were hit with six charges, including conspiracy to commit bank fraud and visa fraud.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Florida pastor, Evan Edwards and his son, Josh, have been arrested for fraudulently obtaining $8.4 million in COVID relief funds and using most of it to purchase of a luxury mansion on Disney World property in the United States.
