A suspected cholera outbreak has killed twenty persons in the Ekeureku community of Abi Local Government Area in Cross River.<\/p>\n
The disease broke out on Thursday and as so far affected 10 villages in the Ekeureku community, NAN reports.<\/p>\n
Iwara Iwara, permanent secretary at the Cross River Ministry of Health, confirmed the outbreak but said he could not give the death toll figure.<\/p>\n
He, however, assured that the state government had activated a health rapid response team, which had swung into action in the community bordering Ebonyi.<\/p>\n
One village head who requested anonymity said it all began when some villagers started feeling severe diarrhea and dehydration.<\/p>\n
He said the health condition was initially thought to be associated with the dry season.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe discovered that this time, the disease was spreading very fast and was killing affected persons within a few minutes of passing out watery stool.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs of Saturday, more than 20 persons have died because of suspected cholera across the 10 villages,\u2019\u2019 he stated.<\/p>\n
The village head added that the community had sent SOS to its natives working in the health sector and that from feedback so far received, the WHO and UNICEF would soon arrive to contain the situation.<\/p>\n
Ekeureku is an agrarian community that could not provide potable water and lacked good health facilities.<\/p>\n
The 10 villages that make up the keureku community are: Agbara, Ngarabe, Ekureku-be, Akpoha, Akare-for, Anong, Emenekpon, Etegevel, Egboronyi, and Emegeh.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
