The Federal Ministry of Works and Housing built and delivered 710 meters of internal roads to the Federal College of Education (Technical) in Omoku, Rivers.<\/p>\n

Mr. Babatunde Fashola, Minister of Works and Housing, handed over the roads to the school on Friday.<\/p>\n

Fashola, who was represented by Mr Olufemi Adetunji, the state’s Federal Controller of Works, stated that the road construction and rehabilitation were aimed at bridging the infrastructural gap.<\/p>\n

He stated that it would foster an environment conducive to teaching and learning.<\/p>\n

The minister disclosed that 15 people were employed during the construction of the roads, thereby contributing to the job creation initiative of the Federal Government.<\/p>\n

He noted that the standard of education in the institution would improve following the investment on infrastructure.<\/p>\n

According to him, the gap of the nation\u2019s infrastructure needs is steadily being bridged by a gradual process of repairs, renewal and construction on major highways and it has reached the schools.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt is not debatable that the quality of education will be impacted by the quality of infrastructure and the learning environment and those who doubt it should simply listen to some of the feedback from students in the schools where this type of intervention had taken place.<\/p>\n

We have successfully intervened in 64 internal road projects in various federal tertiary institutions and handed over 46 of such roads as at March 2022. We now have another 18 roads, ready to be handed over. We are currently attending to 19 other roads in similar institutions across the country, making a total of 83 roads.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe students are expressing renewed enthusiasm with regards to attending classes because some defective roads have been restored to good condition, \u201che said.<\/p>\n

In his speech, Dr Emmanuel Ikenyiri, the Provost of the institution, commended the Federal Government for the intervention.<\/p>\n

He said that the place was formerly a forest and that lecturers and students were scared because of the un-conducive environment which led to tension for over 30 years since the inception of the institution.<\/p>\n

He said that it has remained in a deplorable condition until the Federal Government intervened.<\/p>\n

\u201cWhat the Federal Government has done will make movement easier, lecturers and students will move to their lecture halls without any encumbrance and this will improve learning because roads are critical infrastructure for learning for every higher institution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Ikenyiri appealed to the Federal Government to embark on more projects in the college, such as hostel and lecture halls to make the college conducive for learning.<\/p>\n
