Antonio Guterres, the UN Secretary-General, has promised to make 2023 “a year for peace” and “a year for action,” highlighting the necessity of finding workable solutions to a number of urgent issues that all parts of the world are currently facing.<\/p>\n

Guterres made the pledge during a press conference at the United Nations Headquarters at the end of the year.<\/p>\n

According to him, the United Nations \u201cowe it to people to find solutions, to fight back, and to act\u201d.<\/p>\n

Building on his general call to action, Guterres announced that he would convene a Climate Ambition Summit in September 2023, and called on every leader to \u201cstep up \u2013 from governments, business, cities and regions, civil society and finance.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said it would be \u201ca no-nonsense summit. No exceptions. No compromises. There will be no room for back-sliders, greenwashers, blame-shifters or repackaging of announcements of previous years.\u201d<\/p>\n

It would be convened alongside a General Assembly opening-week summit already on the calendar, designed to accelerate action at the halfway point towards the ambitious Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs).<\/p>\n

Although there might be \u201cplenty of reasons for despair\u201d, amid the Ukraine war, and associated cost-of-living crisis leaving the poorest nations on \u201cdebt row\u201d, was not an option.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis is not a time to sit on the sidelines, it is a time for resolve, determination, and \u2013 yes \u2013 even hope.<\/p>\n

\u201cBecause despite the limitations and long odds, we are working to push back against despair, to fight back against disillusionment, and to find real solutions.<\/p>\n

\u201cNot perfect solutions\u2014not even always pretty solutions\u2014but practical solutions that are making a meaningful difference to people\u2019s lives.<\/p>\n

\u201cSolutions that must put us on a pathway to a better and more peaceful future<\/a>.\u201d<\/p>\n

Guterres highlighted the deal just hours earlier, to halt the destruction of ecosystems worldwide, at the UN\u2019s Biodiversity Conference, COP15.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are finally starting to form a peace pact, with nature\u201d, he said, urging all countries to deliver on their promises.<\/p>\n

Progress has been made on ending the conflict in some of the world\u2019s warzones, he said, pointing to the cessation of hostilities in northern Ethiopia, as another \u201creason for hope\u201d, a by-product of \u201ca rebirth of diplomacy.\u201d<\/p>\n

There\u2019s been progress in the eastern Democratic Republic of Congo too, where armed groups have intensified the fight against government troops, drawing in UN peacekeeping forces, and \u201ca truce in Yemen has delivered real dividends for the people.\u201d<\/p>\n

In spite of pledges made at COP27 in Egypt and the biodiversity deal, it is clear that overall, the battle to limit emissions to just a 1.5-degree increase above pre-industrial levels is still \u201cmoving in the wrong direction,\u201d with the global emissions gap growing.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe 1.5-degree goal is gasping for breath. National climate plans are falling woefully short. And yet, we are not retreating. We are fighting back\u201d, added the UN chief<\/a>.<\/p>\n

He stated that the international community was now \u201cfighting back to restore trust between North and South\u201d by reaching an agreement at COP27 on the long-stalled issue of Loss and Damage.<\/p>\n

Another positive step was taken in 2022 with the launch of an action plan to cover every person in the world with early warning systems, within the next five years.<\/p>\n

\u201cGoing forward, I will keep pushing for a Climate Solidarity Pact, in which all big emitters make an extra effort to reduce emissions this decade in line with the 1.5-degree goal and ensure support for those who need it.<\/p>\n

Without it, he warned, \u201cthe 1.5-degree goal will soon disappear. I have pulled no punches on the imperative for all of us to confront this existential threat. And I will not relent.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
