{"id":237861,"date":"2022-12-28T04:56:14","date_gmt":"2022-12-28T03:56:14","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=237861"},"modified":"2022-12-28T04:56:14","modified_gmt":"2022-12-28T03:56:14","slug":"aggrieved-pdp-governors-may-endorse-obasanjos-candidate-jan-5","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/12\/28\/aggrieved-pdp-governors-may-endorse-obasanjos-candidate-jan-5\/","title":{"rendered":"Aggrieved PDP governors may endorse Obasanjo\u2019s candidate Jan 5"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Barring any unforeseen circumstances, the five aggrieved Peoples Democratic Party governors may endorse the preferred presidential candidate of President Olusegun Obasanjo, on January 5.<\/p>\n<p>According to PUNCH, the governors, who are presently meeting in London, United Kingdom, might be influenced by Obasanjo\u2019s advice that the Presidency should come to the South-East in 2023.<\/p>\n<p>Recall that Governors Nyesom <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/12\/25\/2023-wike-ortom-others-stuck-on-preffered-presidential-candidate\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Wike<\/a> (Rivers), Seyi Makinde (Oyo), Okezie Ikpeazu (Abia), Samuel Ortom (Benue) and Ifeanyi Ugwuanyi of Enugu states and some political heavyweights from the South had parted ways with the PDP presidential candidate, Atiku Abubakar, over his alleged refusal to prevail on the PDP National Chairman, Iyorchia Ayu to resign after Atiku, a northerner clinched the PDP presidential ticket .<\/p>\n<p>The aforementioned publication reported that a top source disclosed that the governors might heed Obasanjo\u2019s counsel that they should endorse the Labour Party presidential standard bearer, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/12\/27\/2023-presidency-peter-obi-will-win-south-east-votes-okupe\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Peter Obi<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Obasanjo had met with the governors in London in August where he reportedly lobbied for Obi.<\/p>\n<p>Giving a background on the factors that might sway their decision, an aide to one of the governors stated, \u201cThe governors are considering <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/12\/18\/why-i-joined-obasanjo-to-support-peter-obi-adebanjo\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Obasanjo<\/a>\u2019s advice that the Presidency should come to the South in 2023. Obasanjo has advised them to support Obi because he believes that if the Presidency comes to the South, it should go to the South East.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThat is why at their last meeting in London, he lobbied for Obi because justice and fairness demand that South-East should produce the next president.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Asked when the governors, known as Integrity Group would unveil their preferred candidate, the source said, \u201cFrom all indications, the governors will announce their preferred candidate next week. If there is no major event before January 5 when Makinde will kick off his campaign, they will make the announcement on that day in Ibadan.\u2019\u2019<\/p>\n<p>An aide to another governor dismissed reports that the group were divided over the choice of the presidential candidate to endorse.<\/p>\n<p>According to the source, at the London meeting on Tuesday, the governors agreed that since Atiku failed to prevail on Ayu to step down, they should work for a southern candidate.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the alleged cracks in the rank of the governors, the source stated, \u201cNot really, but they have different approaches to the issue. Some of them have nothing against Atiku. But none of the governors will come out to speak against the joint decision of the group that the presidency should come to the South.
