Ifeanyi Okowa<\/a>, the Peoples Democratic Party’s (PDP) Vice-Presidential candidate, has distanced himself from allegations that he betrayed some party members.<\/p>\n

Olisa Ifeajika, the Chief Press Secretary to Delta Governor, stated on Monday that his principal did not betray anyone.<\/p>\n

Ifeajika recalled that the Southern Governors’ Forum agreed to work toward the establishment of the Southern Presidency during meetings in Asaba, Lagos, and Enugu.<\/p>\n

He did, however, state that the Southern Governors’ Forum is made up of members from various political parties, and that the forum’s decision was merely a wish.<\/p>\n

Ifeajika went on to say that the forum’s resolution was not meant to be binding on all political parties.<\/p>\n

He stated that decisions varied when forum participants returned to their political party.<\/p>\n

Okowa\u2019s aide said;<\/strong><\/p>\n

For us in PDP, the party told the Governors that it may not go with their position because we are in opposition and in order to get it right, the party set up a committee headed by Benue Governor, Samuel Ortom, to advise it appropriately on the zoning of the ticket.<\/em><\/p>\n

The Ortom committee, in its wisdom, recommended that zoning be jettisoned to allow all aspirants to participate in the primary to enable the best to emerge.<\/em><\/p>\n

The committee presented its report to the party\u2019s National Executive Committee (NEC) where it was agreed to open the presidential ticket to enable the best hands to emerge as recommended.<\/em><\/p>\n

As far as we are aware, no member, including the governors or group protested the party\u2019s decision. They all acquiesced and accepted the party\u2019s decision on zoning.<\/em><\/p>\n

There was no treachery anywhere because no agreement was reached. The party\u2019s position prevailed and delegates at the Presidential Primary voted as they wished.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n

He added that after the party’s presidential primaries, some people still accuse his principal of betrayal.<\/p>\n

Ifeajika asked where the five aggrieved Governors of the PDP identified as the G-5 were when Ortom Committee threw the presidential ticket of the party open.<\/p>\n

He wondered;<\/strong><\/p>\n

Why didn\u2019t they raise their voices against the party\u2019s decision not to zone the ticket to any part and rise against it?<\/em><\/p>\n

They agreed to it, and participated, only to start an agitation without foundation after a candidate had emerged.<\/em><\/p>\n

I see the G-5 Governors\u2019 agitation as a distraction and I appeal to them to sheath their sword and beat a retreat as quickly as possible to join the party\u2019s rescue mission.<\/em><\/p>\n

They remain very senior members of the PDP and they remain an important factor because the next election is a low-hanging fruit for the PDP to pick if we close ranks. We believe that Nigerians would vote for the party.<\/em><\/p><\/blockquote>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
