{"id":239476,"date":"2023-01-05T05:23:12","date_gmt":"2023-01-05T04:23:12","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=239476"},"modified":"2023-01-05T05:23:12","modified_gmt":"2023-01-05T04:23:12","slug":"us-funeral-home-owner-mother-jailed-for-selling-body-parts","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/05\/us-funeral-home-owner-mother-jailed-for-selling-body-parts\/","title":{"rendered":"US funeral home owner, mother jailed for selling body parts"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 46-year-old funeral home owner, Megan Hess, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday for selling body parts in the United States.<\/p>\n<p>According to Reuters, Hess, who pleaded guilty to fraud in July, without the consent of the relatives of the dead, dissected 560 corpses and sold them.<\/p>\n<p>Hess managed a funeral home, Sunset Mesa, and a body parts entity, Donor Services, from the same building in Montrose, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>She was handed a 20-year jail term in federal prison yesterday, the maximum allowed under the law.<\/p>\n<p>Her 69-year-old mother, Shirley Koch, also pleaded guilty to fraud and was sentenced to 15 years. Koch\u2019s central role was chopping up the bodies, court records showed.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHess and Koch used their funeral home at times to essentially steal bodies and <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/09\/07\/ondo-i-killed-sick-man-to-free-him-from-pains-used-his-body-parts-for-rituals-suspected-ritualist\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">body parts<\/a> using fraudulent and forged donor forms,\u201d prosecutor Tim Neff said in a court filing. \u201cHess and Koch\u2019s conduct caused immense emotional pain for the families and next of kin.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The federal case was prompted by a 2016-2018 Reuters investigative series about the sale of body parts in the United States, a virtually unregulated industry.<\/p>\n<p>Former workers told Reuters that Hess and Koch conducted unauthorized dismemberments of bodies, and a few weeks after a 2018 story was published, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/04\/07\/new-york-judge-commits-suicide-weeks-after-fbi-raided-his-home\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">FBI<\/a> raided the business.<\/p>\n<p>In their filing, prosecutors stressed the \u201cmacabre nature\u201d of Hess\u2019 scheme and described it as one of the most significant body parts cases in recent U.S. history.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis is the most emotionally draining case I have ever experienced on the bench,\u201d US District Judge Christine M. Arguello said during Tuesday\u2019s sentencing hearing in Grand Junction, Colorado.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt\u2019s concerning to the court that defendant Hess refuses to assume any responsibility for her conduct.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The judge ordered that Hess and Koch be sent to prison immediately.<\/p>\n<p>Hess\u2019 lawyer said she has been unfairly denigrated as a \u201cwitch,\u201d a \u201cmonster\u201d and a \u201cghoul,\u201d when instead she is a \u201cbroken human being\u201d whose conduct can be attributed to a traumatic brain injury at age 18.<\/p>\n<p>While Hess declined to speak to the judge, her mother, Koch told the judge she was sorry and accepted responsibility for her actions.<\/p>\n<p>Twenty-six victims described their horror at discovering what had happened to their loved ones.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur sweet mother, they dismembered her,\u201d Erin Smith said, selling her shoulders, knees and feet for profit. \u201cWe don\u2019t even have a name for a crime this heinous.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 46-year-old funeral home owner, Megan Hess, has been sentenced to 20 years in prison on Tuesday for selling body parts in the United States.
