{"id":240616,"date":"2023-01-10T13:51:23","date_gmt":"2023-01-10T12:51:23","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=240616"},"modified":"2023-01-10T13:52:08","modified_gmt":"2023-01-10T12:52:08","slug":"cbn-to-move-against-banks-not-loading-new-naira-notes-into-atms","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/10\/cbn-to-move-against-banks-not-loading-new-naira-notes-into-atms\/","title":{"rendered":"CBN to move against banks not loading new naira notes into ATMs"},"content":{"rendered":"<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/07\/cbn-bans-over-the-counter-withdrawal-of-new-naira-notes\/\">The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)<\/a> says it will start penalising commercial banks that are not adhering to its directive of loading the redesigned naira notes in their automated teller machines (ATMs).<\/p>\n<p>Ahmed Umar, CBN director, currency operations, made the disclosure in Abuja on Monday at the training session for state directors of the National Orientation Agency (NOA).<\/p>\n<p>Last week, the apex bank ordered banks to halt dispensing the new currency notes over the counter \u2014 and to only make them available via ATMs.<\/p>\n<p>Umar said the purpose of the CBN directive was to ensure that the January 31 deadline for the withdrawal of old naira notes in circulation is met. <\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe want to use this training session to pass a message that CBN has enough currency notes to go round the general public,\u201d NAN quoted him as saying.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe, CBN management, have mandated banks to stop putting old notes in their ATM machines. They should only put the new notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnd there is a serialisation of the policy that they can put either N500, N1000 or N200 note whichever denomination they have or combination of any of those notes, they should just put a new note in their machines.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe are going to monitor to ensure that the banks comply and if they don\u2019t, we have a penalty for non-compliance.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said in many countries across the world, it takes a few years to change a currency note design.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our own case what we had was basically over 20 years of having the same design of note,\u201d Umar explained.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOver that period, what it did to us was to create an avenue for some people to master the act of counterfeiting the note.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn our own case, what we have is the minimum of 17 years or more for us to redesign our currency.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf you notice the N1000 note that was introduced in 2005, it took 17 years for us to redesign it. N500 and N200 notes were also redesigned after 21 years and 22 years respectively.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, if currency notes stay too long in the system, there is a tendency that people who counterfeit make a lot of efforts to produce the same notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, that is why there is a need to change our notes regularly.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said N500 and N1000 naira notes constitute 99 percent of the currency notes that are being targeted by counterfeiters.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIt is simple logic, the effort you put to counterfeit N1000 is the same effort you put to counterfeit N5,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSo, why will they waste their energy doing small note; they always target the higher note particularly N1000, because of values attached to it.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Garba Abari, director-general of NOA, said his agency partnered with the CBN to educate the agency\u2019s staff to assist in enlightening Nigerians on the redesign of new banknotes policy.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN) says it will start penalising commercial banks that are not adhering to its directive of loading the redesigned naira notes in their automated teller machines (ATMs).
