Islamist militants have kidnapped around 50 women searching for food in Burkina Faso. <\/p>\n
They were kidnapped on Jan. 12 and 13 in northern province of Soum of the West African country. <\/p>\n
The government announced this on Monday, adding the victims were taken in separate incidents as they foraged for food.<\/p>\n
UN human rights chief Volker Turk called for \u201cthe immediate and unconditional release of all the abducted women,\u201d urging authorities to find and punish those responsible.<\/p>\n
Landlocked Burkina Faso is one of the poorest and most volatile nations in the world. Since 2015, it has been grappling with a jihadist insurgency that has killed thousands and displaced around two million people.<\/p>\n
\u201cAs soon as their disappearance was announced, efforts were launched to find all of these innocent victims safe and sound,\u201d Sahel regional governor Lieutenant-Colonel Rodolphe Sorgho said in a statement.<\/p>\n
All means available are being used, in the air and on the ground, to find these women,\u201d a security source told AFP.<\/p>\n
\u201cAircraft are flying over the area to detect any suspicious movement.\u201d<\/p>\n
Mr Sorgho said the women were seized on Thursday and Friday around Arbinda, in an area under blockade by jihadist groups and dependent on food supplies from outside.<\/p>\n

Several women managed to escape and return to their villages to raise the alarm.<\/p>\n
Mr Turk said in his statement that this \u201ccould be the first such attack deliberately targeting women in Burkina Faso.\u201d<\/p>\n
A senior Burkinabe military officer, speaking on condition of anonymity, said the women\u2019s disappearance was \u201cthe first really big kidnapping since the security crisis began.\u201d<\/p>\n
\u201cEverything must be done to avoid a tragedy or a recurrence.\u201d<\/p>\n
