The South African city authorities have disconnected the Nigerian consulate’s electricity supplies in Johannesburg over unpaid bills.<\/p>\n

According to a city official, City officials on Wednesday went to the consulate, in an upmarket northern suburb, to cut off supplies over 400,000 rand ($23,300) in outstanding charges.<\/p>\n

The consulate denied the officials access, describing them in a statement as \u201can invasion squad\u201d. Supplies were remotely switched off.<\/p>\n

AFP reported on Friday that South Africa<\/a>\u2019s foreign ministry spokesman, Clayson Monyela, said that the Nigerian consulate has \u201cdispatched a diplomatic note to us\u201d.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe matter is being handled through diplomatic channels. We\u2019ll engage all parties involved in order to find an amicable solution,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

In a statement, the consulate blasted the city\u2019s action as \u201cin complete violation of\u2026 international treaties and conventions, especially the Vienna Convention on consular relations, which guarantees the inviolability of consular premises\u201d.<\/p>\n

Electricity supplies were reconnected the same day following promises the account would be settled by the end of the month.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe disconnected them on Wednesday during our revenue collection blitz,\u201d city power spokesman Isaac Mangena told AFP.<\/p>\n

The consul-general visited the city offices after the disconnection and \u201cacknowledged the debt\u201d, and negotiated to settle the arrears by the end of the month, said Mangena.<\/p>\n

\u201cThey made an arrangement to (settle) the account by end of January,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe are not treating them as a special customer, but like any other,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Residents and businesses owe the city, the country\u2019s financial and commercial hub, more than four billion rand in outstanding bills.<\/p>\n
