{"id":243785,"date":"2023-01-23T20:38:29","date_gmt":"2023-01-23T19:38:29","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=243785"},"modified":"2023-01-23T20:38:29","modified_gmt":"2023-01-23T19:38:29","slug":"38-dead-as-ncdc-confirms-123-diphtheria-cases","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/23\/38-dead-as-ncdc-confirms-123-diphtheria-cases\/","title":{"rendered":"38 dead as NCDC confirms 123 Diphtheria cases"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>123 cases of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/20\/diphtheria-kills-25-in-kano\/\">Diphtheria<\/a> disease have been confirmed and 38 deaths recorded in four states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Pricilla Ibekwe, Head of Special Projects and Partnerships Unit at NCDC, made the disclosure on Monday in Abuja during the Ministerial bi-weekly meeting on the update of COVID-19 response and development in the country\u2019s health sector.<\/p>\n<p>Ibekwe said that in addition to clinically suspected cases, there had been laboratory-confirmed cases of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>She said the NCDC was working with State Ministries of Health and partners to enhance surveillance and response to the outbreak.<\/p>\n<p>Ibekwe said that based on the latest reports from states shared with the agency as of Jan. 22, about 123 confirmed cases and 38 deaths were recorded in four states.<\/p>\n<p>She gave a state-by-state breakdown as follows: Kano \u2013 100 confirmed cases and 32 deaths; Lagos \u2013 five cases and three deaths; Yobe \u2013 17 cases and 3 deaths, while Osun reported a case and zero death.<\/p>\n<p>Ibekwe said that Diphtheria was a serious bacterial infection caused by the bacterium called Corynebacterium species affecting the nose, throat, and sometimes, skin of an individual.<\/p>\n<p>According to her, Diphtheria spreads easily between people through direct contact with infected people\u2019s droplets from coughing or sneezing, and contact with contaminated clothing and objects.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople most at risk include children and adults who have not received any dose of the pentavalent vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPeople who live in areas with poor sanitation, people who live in a crowded environment, and healthcare workers exposed to suspected or confirmed cases of the disease.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe onset of signs of the disease usually starts after two to 10 days of exposure to the bacteria,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ibekwe said that symptoms of diphtheria includes fever, runny nose, sore throat, cough, red eyes (conjunctivitis), and neck swelling.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn severe cases, a thick grey or white patch appears on the tonsils and\/or at the back of the throat associated with difficulty in breathing,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>She said complications from diphtheria included airway blockage, damage to the heart muscle, nerve damage, and kidney failure. However, for some people, respiratory diphtheria can lead to death.<\/p>\n<p>She said the agency was collaborating with the UK Health Security Agency (UKHSA) to organise a 5-day workshop on enhancing laboratory diagnosis of diphtheria in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>Ibekwe said the workshop was for laboratory scientists working in NCDC\u2019s National Reference Laboratories and its lab network.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis was planned before cases were reported as part of preparedness,\u201d she said.<\/p>\n<p>Ibekwe said that the agency had written to all state Hospitals and Community Health Services to institute immediate and necessary public health measures for timely detection and response to diphtheria at the state level.<\/p>\n<p>She disclosed that to reduce the risk of diphtheria, the NCDC had published a public health advisory, accessible on its website, educating Nigerians on risk factors and offering advice, to reduce the risk of diphtheria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cSuch advices included parents ensuring that their children are fully vaccinated against diphtheria with 3 doses of the pentavalent vaccine.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHealthcare workers should maintain a high index of suspicion for diphtheria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIndividuals with signs and symptoms suggestive of diphtheria should isolate themselves and notify the LGA, DSNO or the NCDC through our toll-free line (6232),\u201d she said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>123 cases of Diphtheria disease have been confirmed and 38 deaths recorded in four states, the Nigeria Centre for Disease Control and Prevention (NCDC) has disclosed.
