{"id":244999,"date":"2023-01-28T16:34:30","date_gmt":"2023-01-28T15:34:30","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=244999"},"modified":"2023-01-28T16:34:30","modified_gmt":"2023-01-28T15:34:30","slug":"just-in-buhari-wades-into-naira-new-notes-scarcity","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/28\/just-in-buhari-wades-into-naira-new-notes-scarcity\/","title":{"rendered":"JUST-IN: Buhari wades into Naira new notes scarcity"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The new naira notes will be distributed more effectively, according to President Muhammadu Buhari.<\/p>\n<p>The president said that the decision to redesign the naira was made to combat the stockpiling of illicit funds in a statement released on Saturday by presidential spokeswoman Garba Shehu.<\/p>\n<p>Despite recognizing reports of lengthy lines at banks, Buhari stated that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/27\/cbn-begins-old-naira-notes-swap-in-sokoto\/\">Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN)<\/a> is working on steps to &#8220;avoid anarchy&#8221; with regard to the distribution of the new notes.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cPresident Muhammadu Buhari, Saturday assured that government will ensure that citizens are unharmed in their businesses and no disruption is caused to the entire supply chain arising from the currency swap due to end shortly,\u201d the statement reads.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cReacting to reports of long queues of people waiting for hours for their turn to deposit old notes and get new ones, triggering public anger and opposition\u2019s criticism, President Buhari reiterated that the currency changes were aimed at people hoarding illicit funds and not the common man, and that it had become necessary to prevent counterfeits, corruption, and terrorist funding.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis, he assured, will stabilize and strengthen the economy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWhile taking note that the poorest section of society is facing hardship as they often keep hard cash at home for various expenses, President Buhari gave strong assurances that the government will not leave them to their own fate.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe reiterated that a number of initiatives by the Central Bank and all commercial banks are underway to speed up distribution of the new notes and do all that is necessary to forestall cash squeeze and chaos.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The new naira notes will be distributed more effectively, according to President Muhammadu Buhari.
