{"id":245237,"date":"2023-01-30T04:07:06","date_gmt":"2023-01-30T03:07:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=245237"},"modified":"2023-01-30T06:16:46","modified_gmt":"2023-01-30T05:16:46","slug":"two-nigerians-arrested-over-500000-fraud-in-canada","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/30\/two-nigerians-arrested-over-500000-fraud-in-canada\/","title":{"rendered":"Two Nigerians arrested over $500k airline ticket fraud in Canada"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Two Nigerians, Gbemisola Akinrinade and Adebowale Adiatu, have been arrested by the Canadian police for allegedly enriching themselves with the proceeds from the sales of valid flight tickets to unsuspecting customers.<\/p>\n<p>According to Canada Today, the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/26\/four-nigerians-arrested-in-cyprus-for-running-prostitution-ring\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigerians<\/a> fraudulently sold more than 250 airline tickets at a value of more than $500,000 in the racket scheme.<\/p>\n<p>The Peel Regional Police. in a press release on January 26, 2023, stated that majority of the customers who purchased the tickets were from the Calgary area and the flights were primarily to Africa.<\/p>\n<p>The suspects are facing charges which include <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/01\/26\/nigerian-man-sentenced-to-two-years-house-arrest-in-canada-for-being-fake-immigrant-officer\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">fraud<\/a>, conspiracy to commit an indictable offence, possession of property obtained by crime, obtaining by false pretences, and unlawful use of a computer.<\/p>\n<p>The police authorities explained that in many fraud-related cases, people in vulnerable situations are coerced, manipulated and taken advantage of for the profit of the fraudster.<\/p>\n<p>However, they urged individuals to properly source the website they are dealing with and verify its legitimacy.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAnyone who recognises or has information about this type of case is asked to contact the 21 Division C.I.B or Fraud Bureau at (905) 453\u20132121, ext. 2133 or 3335 or to your local police service.
