Recep Tayyip Erdogan, the president of Turkey, has hinted that he may support Finland’s application to join NATO while opposing Sweden’s application to join the organization’s Nordic neighbor group.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf necessary, we can send a different message regarding Finland,\u201d Recep Tayyip Erdo\u011fan said in a speech to young people, according to local media reports.<\/p>\n

The Turkish president added: \u201cSweden will be shocked if we make a different statement regarding Finland.\u201d<\/p>\n

At the same time, he warned Finland against making<\/a> the same \u201cmistakes\u201d as its neighbour.<\/p>\n

After decades of neutrality, Finland and Sweden applied to join the alliance in 2022, in response to the Russian invasion of Ukraine in February.<\/p>\n

However, the ratification requires unanimous approval, and member Turkey has so far refused to agree, initially citing security concerns.<\/p>\n

Ever since, diplomatic efforts have been under way to address Ankara\u2019s fears.<\/p>\n

Last week, Erdo\u011fan said that Sweden could not count on his country\u2019s support for accession after a right-wing extremist politician burned a Koran near the Turkish embassy in Stockholm.<\/p>\n

Ankara has also accused both of the prospective Nordic member countries of supporting the outlawed Kurdistan Workers\u2019 Party (PKK) and the Syrian Kurdish militia YPG, both of which Turkey classifies as terrorist groups.<\/p>\n

NATO member state Hungary also still hasn\u2019t approved the accession process for Sweden and Finland.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
