{"id":24574,"date":"2021-04-22T11:05:10","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T10:05:10","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=24574"},"modified":"2021-04-22T11:05:10","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T10:05:10","slug":"reps-reject-exorbitant-acceptance-fees-by-tertiary-institutions","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/22\/reps-reject-exorbitant-acceptance-fees-by-tertiary-institutions\/","title":{"rendered":"Reps reject exorbitant acceptance fees by tertiary institutions"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>House of Representatives Wednesday expressed disappoinment over the huge amount of money paid by students in the nation\u2019s tertiary institutions as acceptance fees.<\/p>\n<p>The House said the development was fast constituting an impediment to the smooth process of entry into universities.<\/p>\n<p>The House urged the Federal Government to increase the funding of public universities to moderate the excessive drive for Internally Generated Revenue, IGR, at the expense of popular access to public education in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/03\/25\/reps-proposes-4-year-tenure-for-igp\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">parliament<\/a> also mandated the Committee on Tertiary Institution and Services to investigate the high acceptance fees charged by th institutions.<\/p>\n<p>The resolution was sequel to a motion, titled \u201cNeed to Investigate the Acceptance Fees Charged by Tertiary Institutions in Nigeria\u201d, sponsored by Julius O. Ihonvbere from Edo State at plenary. Moving the motion earlier, Ihonvbere said \u201cthe arbitrary high acceptance fees charged by some public universities on new students across the country has become a matter of great concern to many families\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>He further said that \u201camid the rising frustrations over the exorbitant fees, indigent families of new students that are forced to pay the acceptance fees are bemoaning the unusual astronomical increases against the backdrop of the fact that federal universities are supposedly tuition-free.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe acceptance fees are discriminatory, as they vary from one University to the other which clearly shows that they have become mere internal revenue-generating mechanisms thus constituting an impediment to the smooth process of entry into Universities\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The lawmaker added that while some of the institutions are charging minimal fees, others are charging astronomically whereas, others do not charge anything, while most institutions do not charge acceptance fee against tuition fees, thus raising the question as to whether the institutions were not established under the same law.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIf the situation is unchecked, acceptance fees may surreptitiously become the school fee, thus affecting the number of students that may gain entry into higher institutions in Nigeria.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe dire consequences of exorbitant acceptance fees in our Public Universities have led to many indigent students losing their admission as a result of their inability to afford the fees,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Adopting the motion, the House gave the committee four weeks to conclude the assignment and report back to it for further legislative action.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>House of Representatives Wednesday expressed disappoinment over the huge amount of money paid by students in the nation\u2019s tertiary institutions as acceptance fees.
