{"id":24634,"date":"2021-04-22T13:31:26","date_gmt":"2021-04-22T12:31:26","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=24634"},"modified":"2021-04-22T13:31:26","modified_gmt":"2021-04-22T12:31:26","slug":"uk-replies-fg-on-asylum-for-ipob-members","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/22\/uk-replies-fg-on-asylum-for-ipob-members\/","title":{"rendered":"UK replies FG on asylum for IPOB members"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Hours after the federal government countered the United Kingdom on its decision to consider granting asylum to members of the Independent People of Biafra (IPOB) and the Movement for the Actualisation of the Sovereign State of Biafra (MASSOB), the European country has defended its decision.<\/p>\n<p>The British High Commission in Nigeria disclosed that<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0the UK provides protection to those who need it, in response to the federal government\u2019s criticism of the move.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Recall that the<span class=\"s1\">\u00a0UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) had released new guidelines on how to treat <strong><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/20\/uk-to-grant-asylum-to-persecuted-ipob-and-massob-members\/\">asylum<\/a><\/strong> applications by members of Biafran secessionist groups.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In the guidelines, asylum is to be granted to \u201cpersecuted\u201d members of MASSOB and IPOB, which had been designated as a terrorist organisation in Nigeria.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>Reacting to the development,<span class=\"s1\"> Lai Mohammed, minister of information, had kicked against the move which he said<\/span><span class=\"s1\">\u00a0amounts to sabotaging Nigeria\u2019s fight against terrorism.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cAgainst the background of the fact that IPOB is not only proscribed but also designated as a terrorist organisation here in Nigeria, the UK\u2019s decision is disrespectful of Nigeria as a nation,\u201d Mohammed had also said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">In its response to the minister\u2019s comments, the British High Commission said it considers asylum to <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/18\/ipob-threatens-to-invade-north-with-esn-operatives\/\">Nigerians<\/a> seeking one \u201con their individual merits in accordance with our international obligations.\u201d<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cThe UK has a proud history of providing protection to those who need it, in accordance with our international obligations under the Refugee Convention and European Convention on Human Rights,\u201d PUNCH quoted the high commission to have said.<\/span><\/p>\n<p class=\"p1\"><span class=\"s1\">\u201cOur country policy and information notes are published on the gov.uk website.
