{"id":249087,"date":"2023-02-15T07:58:59","date_gmt":"2023-02-15T06:58:59","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=249087"},"modified":"2023-02-15T07:58:59","modified_gmt":"2023-02-15T06:58:59","slug":"new-naira-fg-cbn-will-act-after-supreme-court-ruling-presidency","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/02\/15\/new-naira-fg-cbn-will-act-after-supreme-court-ruling-presidency\/","title":{"rendered":"New naira: FG, CBN will act after Supreme Court ruling- Presidency"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria have not taken a position on the continued use of the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes as legal tender, according to the Presidency, given that the Supreme Court is still considering the case and will hear it today (Wednesday).<\/p>\n<p>Garba Shehu, the Senior Special Assistant to the President for Media and Publicity, stated that following the outcome of the suit on Wednesday, the FG would announce its position on the new naira policy.<\/p>\n<p>In a response to newsmen on Tuesday, he said \u201cFollowing series of enquiries, we wish to state that it is not true that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/02\/10\/old-notes-fg-to-obey-supreme-court-ruling\/\">FG or the CBN<\/a> has taken a pre-emptive action on the legality of currency as a legal tender in view of the pendency of the case before the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe wish to state that it is not true that the Federal Government or the Central Bank of Nigeria, CBN have taken a preemptive action on the legality of currency as a legal tender in view of the pendency of the case before the Supreme Court.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe position of the government and the CBN will be made known upon the determination of the suit coming up tomorrow.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>This comes about one week after the Supreme Court, in a ruling on February 8, suspended the CBN\u2019s February 10 deadline to halt the use of old naira notes.<\/p>\n<p>The bank had ordered citizens to exchange old N200, N500 and N1,000, banknotes for a redesigned version of the same currencies.<\/p>\n<p>However, the Supreme Court, responding to an ex parte application filed by the governments of Kaduna, Kogi and Zamfara, stopped the CBN from effecting its ban on the old notes pending the hearing and determination of the case on Wednesday, February 15.<\/p>\n<p>&nbsp;<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Federal Government and the Central Bank of Nigeria have not taken a position on the continued use of the old N200, N500, and N1,000 notes as legal tender, according to the Presidency, given that the Supreme Court is still considering the case and will hear it today (Wednesday).
