The Bishop of the Catholic Diocese of Sokoto, Matthew Hassan-Kukah, has said that President Muhammadu Buhari, former presidents Goodluck Jonathan, Olusegun Obasanjo, among others became presidents of Nigeria unprepared.<\/p>\n

Kukah said no President or Head of State in the history of Nigeria ever came prepared for the job of being the president of the country.<\/p>\n

He stated these while speaking during an interview with Channels Television, in a broadcast aired Sunday night.<\/p>\n

Kukah said, \u201cYou can go all the way down in Nigeria, you\u2019re not going to find one single person who has been President or Head of State in Nigeria that came prepared for the job.\u201d<\/p>\n

Using the analogy of a \u201cbad marriage\u201d to explain the relationship between Nigeria and its political leaders, the cleric said, \u201cI always say to people, as a priest, that the solution to a bad marriage is not a new marriage. It\u2019s often an attempt to look at what has gone wrong. And if you jump into a new marriage very quickly, after some time, you become nostalgic about the first marriage.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said one could say the same thing about Nigeria, adding, \u201cA lot of these changes that we have seen in Nigeria are largely unprogrammed.\u201d<\/p>\n

The cleric, who also referenced the military era, added, \u201cMilitary coups by themselves that stretched over 20 years were just glorified banditry and armed robbery because you pull the gun and became a Head of State.\u201d<\/p>\n

He noted that Nigeria had yet to produce an executive head who is really prepared for office.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf I take you back, we have President Buhari now. Buhari<\/a> already in 2011 had said, \u2018I don\u2019t want to be President again, I\u2019m tired.\u2019 He was literally pulled out screaming to be President in 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe took over from (Goodluck) Jonathan. Jonathan himself, you know the circumstances that brought him to power. (Umar) Yar\u2019Adua before him; Yar\u2019Adua was already saying, \u2018I\u2019m done, I want to go back to teach in the university,\u201d Kukah<\/a> said.<\/p>\n

Kukah noted that the unpreparedness was also evident in Yar\u2019Adua\u2019s predecessor, former President Olusegun Obasanjo.<\/p>\n

\u201cObasanjo was in prison hoping that one day, he would walk out of prison, and if he\u2019s strong enough, he\u2019d go back to his farm. You can go on and on,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbdulsalami was about to be retired from the military when (General Sani) Abacha died and he became Head of State. If we\u2019re to return to the scene of the crime, that\u2019s where you have to go back to,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
