The Ogun State Police Command has detained 27 people in connection with the chaos that erupted in Sagamu on Monday morning.<\/p>\n

SP Abimbola Oyeyemi, the state Police Public Relations Officer, made the announcement on Monday, just hours after the violence that resulted in the destruction of two banks.<\/p>\n

In a brief statement, Oyeyemi stated that normalcy has returned to the area.<\/p>\n

“Normalcy has been restored in greater parts of Sagamu now,” he said. CP Frank Mba is personally leading police teams and military personnel to deal with the situation<\/a>.<\/p>\n

\u201cAbout 27 suspects have been arrested.\u201d<\/p>\n

There had been reports of violence that broke out on Monday morning when some irate youths in Sagamu, Ogun State, went on the rampage following their inability to withdraw cash.<\/p>\n

With bonfires, the protesters barricaded the Sagamu-Benin expressway and others, preventing human and vehicular movements.<\/p>\n

WITHIN NIGERIA gathered that the violence broke out as early as 8am<\/strong><\/a> when the angry youths took to the streets and started the violence.<\/p>\n

The violence erupted as a result of the alleged stoppage of the banks\u2019 operations.<\/p>\n

It was further gathered that the youths got enraged when the Automated Teller Machines reportedly stopped dispensing cash last week.<\/p>\n

President Muhammadu Buhari had last week ordered that the old N200 notes be allowed to co-exist with the new notes till April 10 while both old N500 and N1,000 notes ceased to be legal tender.<\/p>\n

Some residents who spoke with newsmen said two banks were damaged. The affected banks, according to them, were Keynote and Union banks.<\/p>\n

The Akarigbo of Remo, Oba Babatunde Ajayi, has called for calm.<\/p>\n

A statement from the palace reads: \u201cI appeal to all to remain calm and peaceful as we continue to engage the Federal Government.<\/p>\n

\u201cThis policy is not from the State or local government. Therefore, the destruction of lives and properties will only compound an already bad situation.<\/p>\n

\u201cI urge our people to continue to accept the old notes in line with the Supreme Court ruling. No person who accepts the old notes would lose out. I can assure you of that, and please hold on to that promise.\u201d<\/p>\n
