{"id":250935,"date":"2023-02-23T05:48:01","date_gmt":"2023-02-23T04:48:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=250935"},"modified":"2023-02-23T05:48:01","modified_gmt":"2023-02-23T04:48:01","slug":"naira-redesign-why-we-cant-prosecute-governors-over-alleged-inciting-comments-igp","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/02\/23\/naira-redesign-why-we-cant-prosecute-governors-over-alleged-inciting-comments-igp\/","title":{"rendered":"Naira redesign: Why we can&#8217;t prosecute governors over alleged inciting comments \u2013 IGP"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Usman Baba, the inspector-general of police (IGP), says governors cannot be prosecuted over alleged seditious comments on the naira redesign policy of the Central Bank of Nigeria (CBN).<\/p>\n<p>Baba made this known on Wednesday while addressing journalists after the national security council meeting presided over by President <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/02\/22\/dont-subvert-will-of-nigerians-buhari-tells-presidential-candidates\/\">Muhammadu Buhari<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Governors such as Nasir el-Rufai of Kaduna and Dapo Abiodun of Ogun have asked residents of their respective states to shun the directive of President Muhammadu Buhari on the naira redesign policy.<\/p>\n<p>While the federal government has declared the old N500 and N1,000 notes as invalid, the two governors have said the notes remain legal tender pending the determination of a suit before the supreme court on the matter.<\/p>\n<p>Amid the directives and counter-directives, there have been protests in parts of the country, as well as attacks on banks, including in Ogun state.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on the comments by the governors, which have been criticised in some quarters as \u201cinciting\u201d, the IGP said governors found culpable cannot be prosecuted by the police because they have immunity.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe all know why the governors have not been cautioned. We are investigating. Whoever does anything can be investigated,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut for him to be prosecuted, there are some people who have immunity.
