{"id":252345,"date":"2023-03-01T04:46:42","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T03:46:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=252345"},"modified":"2023-03-01T04:46:42","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T03:46:42","slug":"ekweremadu-doctor-lied-to-have-kidney-transplant-uk-court-told","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/01\/ekweremadu-doctor-lied-to-have-kidney-transplant-uk-court-told\/","title":{"rendered":"Ekweremadu: Doctor lied to have kidney transplant, UK court told"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Nigerian doctor, Obinna Obeta, has admitted in a United Kingdom court that he lied about a potential kidney donor because he was \u201cdesperate\u201d for his own operation to go ahead.<\/p>\n<p>51-year-old Obeta, is accused of being part of an international criminal conspiracy in an organ transplant trafficking plot.<\/p>\n<p>The Old Bailey heard how Dr Obeta had travelled with a donor from Nigeria in 2021 who he incorrectly said was his cousin.<br \/>\nHe denies breaking modern slavery laws.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that former Senate President, Ike <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/07\/23\/nigerian-doctor-charged-in-uk-with-plotting-with-ekweremadu-and-wife-for-alleged-kidney-harvesting\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Ekweremadu, 60, and his wife Beatrice<\/a>, 56, were arrested for bringing a man to the UK to provide a kidney for their 25-year-old daughter, Sonia.<\/p>\n<p>The Ekweremadus, however, denied conspiring to arrange or facilitate the travel of the young man to Britain with a view to his exploitation in May 2022.<\/p>\n<p>Dr Obeta is accused of being an associate in the plot.<\/p>\n<p>Yesterday, the court heard how Dr Obeta had successfully undergone a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/02\/23\/ekweremadu-offered-me-n1-2m-to-donate-my-kidney-to-his-daughter-alleged-victim-tells-court\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kidney transplant<\/a> in the UK in 2021, with a donor travelling from Nigeria who was said to be his cousin.<\/p>\n<p>But asked by his defence barrister, Sally Howes KC, if the man was in fact his cousin, Dr Obeta admitted that he was not.<br \/>\n\u201cNo, he\u2019s not a blood relative. I wish to apologise for that,\u201d Dr Obeta said.<br \/>\n\u201cAt that point, I was really desperate to survive,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Asked if he accepted that identifying him as a cousin was a lie, Dr Obeta said: \u201cI\u2019m not proud of that.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>\u2018Others in mind\u2019<\/p>\n<p>Dr Obeta denied that he had offered any money for the donor\u2019s kidney, or any kind of reward and told the court that he had kept in touch with the man after the operation.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe was more like my son at this point,\u201d Dr Obeta said.<\/p>\n<p>The court heard that after his operation, Dr Obeta had contacted his donor to ask if he was able to find any further potential donors.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThere were others I had in mind.
