{"id":252360,"date":"2023-03-01T05:34:43","date_gmt":"2023-03-01T04:34:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=252360"},"modified":"2023-03-01T08:36:41","modified_gmt":"2023-03-01T07:36:41","slug":"gtbank-denies-giving-tinubu-n500m-new-notes-for-election","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/01\/gtbank-denies-giving-tinubu-n500m-new-notes-for-election\/","title":{"rendered":"GTBank denies giving Tinubu N500m new notes for election"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The management of Guaranty Trust Bank has denied giving the All Progressives Congress, APC standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, N500m naira new notes on the eve of the presidential and National Assembly election.<\/p>\n<p>The bank made this known in a statement posted on its social media on Tuesday while reacting to a Twitter user, @ifygold21, who claimed that the bank gave the sum on February 24, 2022, on the order of President Muhammadu Muhammadu Buhari.<\/p>\n<p>According to the statement, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/11\/19\/my-relationship-with-gtbank-changed-after-ex-mds-exit-says-innoson-chairman\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">GTbank<\/a> described the sponsors of the post as uninformed and malicious.<\/p>\n<p>It added that the name of its managing director is Miriam Olusanya and not Segun Agbaje as posted by the sponsor of the post.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"alignnone size-full wp-image-252361 aligncenter\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/03\/kunlenet07\/2023\/03\/01\/Tinubu-and-GTbank.jpeg\" alt=\"\" width=\"720\" height=\"546\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/03\/kunlenet07\/2023\/03\/01\/Tinubu-and-GTbank.jpeg 720w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2023\/03\/kunlenet07\/2023\/03\/01\/Tinubu-and-GTbank-300x228.jpeg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 720px) 100vw, 720px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>The statement read, \u201cThe attention of Guaranty Trust Bank Ltd (the \u201cBank\u201d) has been drawn to a spurious post on Twitter by @ ifygold21 alleging that the Bank gave the new Naira notes in the total sum of \u20a6500 million to one of the leading <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/02\/17\/naira-scarcity-two-presidential-candidates-own-banks-have-access-to-huge-funds-el-rufai\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">presidential candidates<\/a> in the ongoing General Elections on the eve of the elections and at the order of a high-ranking Government official.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe Bank wishes to refute this claim in its entirety and state categorically that it is completely false and is designed to bring the image of the Bank and its officers to disrepute. The fact that the post refers to Segun Agbaje as Managing Director of the Bank further exposes the sponsors of the content as uninformed and malicious. Accordingly, we would like to clarify that Miriam Olusanya is the Managing Director of the Bank and has been at the helm of affairs of the Bank in that capacity since her appointment in August 2021.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>GTB also said their preliminary findings showed that the post was made using a faceless bot account thought to be operated by unscrupulous person intent on propagating falsehood and inciting well-meaning Nigerians to their malicious ends.<\/p>\n<p>This attack, the bank said, is clearly unwarranted and poses a serious threat to their continuing operations, with incalculable risks to lives and property.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis post has been escalated to all concerned parties including Twitter, for the identification of the owner of this fake account and consequent legal action.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cOur Nigerian operations support a diverse customer base with varied business interests in communities across the country and remain available to everyone.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGuaranty Trust Bank hereby restates its commitment to being a responsible, non-partisan corporate citizen with strict adherence to the highest standards of global best practice as well as sound corporate governance in all aspects of our business operations.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The management of Guaranty Trust Bank has denied giving the All Progressives Congress, APC standard bearer, Asiwaju Bola Tinubu, N500m naira new notes on the eve of the presidential and National Assembly election.
