{"id":253301,"date":"2023-03-05T15:09:37","date_gmt":"2023-03-05T14:09:37","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=253301"},"modified":"2023-03-05T15:09:37","modified_gmt":"2023-03-05T14:09:37","slug":"uk-nigerian-midwife-sues-nhs-employers-over-racism","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/05\/uk-nigerian-midwife-sues-nhs-employers-over-racism\/","title":{"rendered":"UK: Nigerian midwife sues NHS employers over racism"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A Nigerian midwife, Olukemi Akinmeji, has sued her former employers, the United Kingdom\u2019s National Health Service, over alleged racism she experienced while working at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent.<\/p>\n<p>Akinmeji claimed a colleague at William Harvey Hospital, had joked that staff should \u2018check their bags\u2019 as she left.<\/p>\n<p>According to The Mirror, she said the comments were parts of harassment she suffered during nearly two years of working in a \u201ctoxic\u201d environment where her colleagues would \u201cgang up\u201d against her.<\/p>\n<p>She has now successfully sued her bosses after talking to an employment tribunal, where it was heard the comments were just one of several incidents of racial discrimination.<\/p>\n<p>The <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/08\/14\/nigerian-sues-uk-for-denying-him-entry-after-landing-at-manchester-airport\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Nigerian national<\/a> started her role at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent, in March 2018, where she worked until handing in her notice in December of the following year.<\/p>\n<p>On her final day in January 2020, shift coordinator Kathy Carr repeatedly said \u201cit\u2019s Kemi\u2019s last day, everyone check your bags\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>While Ms Carr claimed it was \u201clight-hearted,\u201d Ms Akinmeji said: \u201cI do not see what was funny in being portrayed as a thief in front of my colleagues, patients and family members\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>The \u201cjoke\u201d, the tribunal heard, was then repeated in the ward\u2019s hallway, with Ms Carr claiming she hadn\u2019t realised at the time it was \u201cin bad taste\u201d and \u201cinappropriate in front of colleagues\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>She told the hearing she had only just found out Ms Akinmeji was leaving and wanted to say something \u201clight-hearted\u201d, and that the comment was made in response to posters put up in cloakrooms over real thefts that had been reported.<\/p>\n<p>Akinmeji made an official complaint to East Kent Hospitals University <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/10\/11\/nigerian-doctors-recruited-to-work-in-uk-hospitals-lament-exploitation-and-slave-labour\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">NHS<\/a> Trust during her exit interview.<\/p>\n<p>The Mirror quoted her as saying, \u201cIf the Trust have zero tolerance to racism then it should act appropriately.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cMy complaint against Kathy Carr is however a formal complaint because she never was a friend nor joked with me.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYes, I have had a few sarcastic remarks from her but I do not see what was funny in being portrayed as a thief in front of my colleagues, patients, and family members.<\/p>\n<p>Although it dismissed many of her racism claims, the tribunal did concluded that she had been discriminated against by the remark, The Daily Mail said.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A Nigerian midwife, Olukemi Akinmeji, has sued her former employers, the United Kingdom\u2019s National Health Service, over alleged racism she experienced while working at William Harvey Hospital in Ashford, Kent.
