{"id":253752,"date":"2023-03-07T13:24:09","date_gmt":"2023-03-07T12:24:09","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=253752"},"modified":"2023-03-07T13:24:09","modified_gmt":"2023-03-07T12:24:09","slug":"lagos-landlord-arraigned-for-reporting-tenants-to-okija-shrine","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/07\/lagos-landlord-arraigned-for-reporting-tenants-to-okija-shrine\/","title":{"rendered":"Lagos landlord arraigned for reporting tenants to \u2018Okija\u2019 shrine"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A landlord, Okechukwu Chukwunahi, has been arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates\u2019 Court in Lagos, for an alleged \u2018trial by ordeal\u2019.<\/p>\n<p>The police charged the 44-year-old defendant with conspiracy and trial by ordeal, according to News Agency of Nigeria. <\/p>\n<p>He, however, pleaded not guilty to the charge.<\/p>\n<p>The Prosecution Counsel, Dr Simon Uche, told the court that the defendant committed the offence on Feb. 21 at Ira Quatres, Ojo <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/07\/theres-plan-to-assassinate-rhodes-vivour-before-lagos-guber-poll-bode-george\/\">Lagos<\/a>. <\/p>\n<p>He said that following a misunderstanding with his tenants, the defendant resorted to taking their names to a deity \u201cArusi Okija\u201d shrine.<\/p>\n<p>The nominal complainants according to the prosecutor are Onyeka Ibeabuchi and Chimezie Ezeuka.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the tenants later received a call from the priest of the shrine, inviting them to appear in person before Feb. 27, or risk death.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecutor said that the defendant had initially referred the matter for mediation and later to a court in Badagry, but feeling unsatisfied, resorted to illegal means of trial by ordeal at the shrine.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the offence contravened the provisions of sections 127 and 411 of the Criminal Law of Lagos State, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Magistrate L.J.K Layeni admitted the defendant to bail in the sum of N300, 000 with two sureties in like sum.<\/p>\n<p>He adjourned the trial until Mach 20.<\/p>\n<p>The section punishes anyone who directs or presides over a trial by ordeal as a felon and punishes it with ten years<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A landlord, Okechukwu Chukwunahi, has been arraigned before an Ojo Magistrates\u2019 Court in Lagos, for an alleged \u2018trial by ordeal\u2019.
