Chief Obinna Ichita, an Abia lawmaker, called Governor Okezie Ikpeazu’s recent promise of automatic promotion to Local Government employees deceptive and “an insult on the collective sensibility of people.<\/p>\n

The lawmaker stated that the governor must believe that the residents of Abia State are gullible and susceptible to being seduced by his irrational promises in the final days<\/a> before the governorship election.<\/p>\n

Ichita stated that the promotion’s payment was not included in the 2023 Appropriations Act and therefore could not have been carried out.<\/p>\n

The lawmaker responded to the automatic promotion that Governor Ikpeazu had announced during a meeting with state civil servants on Thursday when he spoke to journalists in Umuahia on Friday.<\/p>\n

Additionally, he pointed out that the Governor has not kept the majority of the commitments he made prior to being elected, despite the fact that some employees were still owed up to 36 months of wages.<\/p>\n

He said: \u201cThe automatic promotion to Local Government workers coming barely by one week to the election is a mere subterfuge.<\/p>\n

\u201cThere are workers who are owed up to 36 months salary arrears and never enjoyed any promotion for many years under Ikpeazu\u2019s administration.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe governor has not paid workers allowance and other entitlements since he assumed office in 2015.<\/p>\n

\u201cTherefore, the announcement is deceptive and cannot fly.<\/p>\n

\u201cAlso, there is no provision in the 2023 budget to cover the salaries for the promotion.<\/p>\n

\u201cIf he was genuine, he would have increased the provision for recurrent expenditure for us to assume that he planned to promote workers.\u201d<\/p>\n

Ichita further described the governor\u2019s gesture as \u201can insult on the collective sensibility of our people.<\/p>\n

\u201cIt shows that he thinks that the workers are fools to be carried away by his unrealistic promise,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He, therefore, advised the workers to ignore the pronouncement and take it as one of the governor\u2019s phoney promises.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe promised to build Enyimba Economic City, Education City at Owerrinta, reconstruction of Ahiaohuru and Ariaria markets in Aba before the end of 2021.<\/p>\n

\u201cHe also promised an underground tunnel at Ifeobara Pond and revitalisation of the education and health sectors but all these and many others have remained unfulfilled,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

The lawmaker also took a swipe at the governor for not paying attention to critical roads in some parts of Aba, including the Port Harcourt Road, which he started but abandoned midway.<\/p>\n

He also listed the Omuma Road, Obuohia Road and Ohanku Road, among the deplorable roads in the commercial city begging for attention.<\/p>\n

He similarly expressed concern over the dilapidation of the Abia State University Teaching Hospital, Aba, saying that the only functional unit at the facility was the mortuary<\/a>.<\/p>\n

Ichita, who is the APGA Deputy Governorship Candidate, also spoke about the prospects of the party in the March 18 polls.<\/p>\n

He said that the party, which bears the Igbo identity, was fully acceptable to the people of the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cAPGA will win the governorship poll overwhelmingly because our people believe in us,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

He also described the party\u2019s Governorship Candidate, Prof. Greg Ibe, as the candidate to beat.<\/p>\n

According to him, Ibe is the highest single private employer of labour with a huge investment in education in the state.<\/p>\n

\u201cOthers take their investments to other cities because they say that there is no significant return on investment in Abia,\u201d Ichita said.<\/p>\n

He also said that beyond building a university, the Gregory University, Uturu, Ibe was also making substantial contribution to the health sector through his free medical and surgery services to the people.<\/p>\n

He expressed joy over Wednesday\u2019s Supreme Court judgment that affirmed Ibe\u2019s candidacy for the election.<\/p>\n

He said that with the judgment, the judiciary acquitted itself as the last hope of the common man and respecter of no person.<\/p>\n

The News Agency of Nigeria (NAN) reports that Ibe\u2019s emergence from the party\u2019s primary was challenged by three other governorship aspirants.<\/p>\n
