{"id":257755,"date":"2023-03-24T18:30:32","date_gmt":"2023-03-24T17:30:32","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=257755"},"modified":"2023-03-24T18:30:32","modified_gmt":"2023-03-24T17:30:32","slug":"well-commence-prosecution-of-corrupt-govs-after-may-29-efcc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/24\/well-commence-prosecution-of-corrupt-govs-after-may-29-efcc\/","title":{"rendered":"We&#8217;ll commence prosecution of &#8216;corrupt&#8217; govs after May 29 \u2013 EFCC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) says it will go after some outgoing governors and other public officials after May 29.<\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/02\/09\/efcc-asks-appeal-court-to-stop-arrest-committal-of-bawa-to-prison\/\">EFCC Chairman<\/a>, Abdulrasheed Bawa, made this known on Thursday in an interview with Daily Trust at the headquarters of the commission. <\/p>\n<p>He stated that more arrests would be made immediately after May 29.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, did not disclose names or the number of public officials that would be brought under the law.<\/p>\n<p>Governors are among public officials that enjoy immunity and therefore cannot be arrested or tried while in office.<\/p>\n<p>Besides targeting those to be picked at the end of this administration, Bawa also disclosed that at least two ministries are currently under the radar of the commission for fraudulent activities that border on procurement processes.<\/p>\n<p>According to him, one of the ministries committed fraud on about 20 contracts to the tune of N4 billion.<\/p>\n<p>Bawa said, \u201cCurrently, we\u2019re investigating two ministries where double payments were made. In one of the ministries, the double payments, cumulatively, were about 20 contracts of over N4bn.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThese were contracts that were done way back 2018, and then some group of people, so bold, came up with the same narration.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThey moved the documents from the file, forged them, and then of course in conspiracy of some civil servants, raised vouchers and pay.
