{"id":257936,"date":"2023-03-25T15:05:43","date_gmt":"2023-03-25T14:05:43","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=257936"},"modified":"2023-03-25T15:05:43","modified_gmt":"2023-03-25T14:05:43","slug":"why-voter-apathy-marred-general-election-acf","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/25\/why-voter-apathy-marred-general-election-acf\/","title":{"rendered":"Why voter apathy marred general election \u2013 ACF"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Arewa Consultative Forum (ACF) has spoken on the pervasive voter apathy in the just concluded national and state elections. <\/p>\n<p><a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/02\/you-need-to-be-patient-acf-chieftain-advises-peter-obi\/\">The sociopolitical group<\/a> said that the ethnic and religious politics being played in the country was responsible for the indifference of the electorate towards exercising their franchise. <\/p>\n<p>The forum made this known in a statement titled: \u2018Dealing with the aftermath of the 2023 elections\u2019 by its Secretary General, Murtala Aliyu. <\/p>\n<p>Aliyu said Nigerians must do everything within their powers to eliminate the virus and go on to inoculate themselves against re-infection in the years to come.<\/p>\n<p>He noted that with the size of the country\u2019s operations, isolated incidents are impossible to prevent, adding, \u201cWe are pleased to note that candidates that felt dissatisfied with the outcome of the elections including presidential candidates of the PDP, Atiku Abubakar and Peter Obi of the Labour Party, have resolved to go to court, not the streets, to seek redress, that\u2019s the right and honourable thing to do.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He however expressed concern over the deployment of ethnic and religious sentiments as a driver of politics in Nigeria saying, \u201cAs we have seen in Lagos and elsewhere, ethnic and religious zealots have a way of turning political and election campaigns into life and death struggles.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>According to him, \u201cThey issue threats of violence and at times actually attack supporters of rival candidates with a view to intimidating and stopping them from casting their votes. It ought not to come as any surprise that voter apathy and absenteeism were unusually high in many areas \u2013 as well as why voter turnout was very low across the country.
