The Peoples Democratic Party (PDP) has appointed Bukola Saraki, a former Senate president<\/a>, as head of the party’s Bayelsa State ward congress electoral committee.<\/p>\n

The committee will hold ward congresses to choose three ad hoc delegates who will ultimately choose the party’s nominee for governor of the state.<\/p>\n

Sunday Katung, Danjuma Danladi, and Mammy Balami will serve as members of the committee, and Gabriel Onyewife will serve as secretary, according to a statement released on Tuesday by the PDP’s National Organising Secretary, Umar Bature.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe Congresses are scheduled for 28 and 29 March in each of the 105 Wards in Bayelsa State,\u201d Mr Bature said.<\/p>\n

Recall that the party had cleared the incumbent governor, Duoye Diri<\/a> for the forthcoming party governorship primary.<\/p>\n

Mr Diri is the only aspirant for the party ticket.<\/p>\n

Oil-rich Bayelsa is one of the states in the country where the Independent National Electoral Commission<\/a> has scheduled 11 November for the conduct of its governorship election.<\/p>\n

The state is one of the PDP\u2019s strongholds in the South-south region of the country.<\/p>\n

However, the party lost the state to the opposition All Progressives Congress (APC) during the November 2019 governorship election.<\/p>\n

David Lyon, the APC candidate was declared the winner of the election.<\/p>\n

But a Federal High Court in Abuja on the eve Mr Lyon\u2019s inauguration as governor disqualified the APC deputy governorship candidate, Biobarakuma Degi-Eremienyo, from participating in the governorship election for providing conflicting information in his documents to INEC.<\/p>\n

Following the disqualification, the PDP which came second in the election regained power in the state.<\/p>\n

In the just concluded general elections, the PDP won all three senatorial seats in the state.<\/p>\n

It also won four out of five House of Representatives seats and 20 out of the 24 seats in the State Assembly.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
