Orji Kalu<\/a>, senate chief whip, has appealed to President Muhammadu Buhari not to go into \u201cfull retirement\u201d when he leaves office on May 29.<\/p>\n

Kalu made the appeal while addressing state house correspondents after meeting with Buhari at the presidential villa, Abuja, on Tuesday.<\/p>\n

The senator said he asked the president to take over the position of the chairman of the APC board of trustees (BOT) immediately after handing over to the president-elect on May 29.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe party should bring back our board of trustees or something that looks like it so that Mr. President will be chairman of the board of trustees of the party so that every four or five months, he will come and see how the party is doing,\u201d Kalu said.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe cannot just leave the party empty. It was done in the young days of the APC so that the president will still be part of the conscience of the party.\u201d<\/p>\n

Kalu noted that the APC was faced with serious crises before the general election, adding that Buhari\u2019s interventions saved the ruling party from \u201cgoing under\u201d.<\/p>\n

The senator urged the president not to totally retire from politics.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe will have somebody to run to when we have problems in the party because it was just God that saved our party. That is the truth,\u201d Kalu said.<\/p>\n

\u201cGod saved our party because the quarrel inside the party was so much, the rancour was so much. It\u2019s just God that saved this party.<\/p>\n

\u201cSo, we need a man like President Buhari to be aside. Every three, four months, we will go and drag him from Daura and he will settle party matters. We\u2019ll put him back; he goes back there and continues looking after his cattle and rice, and all the rest of them.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
