asylum seekers<\/a> at repurposed barracks buildings and portable buildings at two former Royal Air Force bases in southeast and eastern England.<\/p>\nJenrick added that a separate site on private land in East Sussex in southeast England will also be used.<\/p>\n
The government is also exploring the \u201cpossibility of accommodating migrants in vessels\u201d such as ferries and barges as it looks to reduce a \u00a32.3 billion ($2.8 billion) annual bill for hotel accommodation.<\/p>\n
Prime Minister Rishi Sunak has made stopping illegal crossings of the Channel one of his priorities, and Jenrick said the prospect of hotel accommodation was a draw for those making the dangerous journeys.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese hotels take valuable assets from communities and place pressures on local public services,\u201d he told MPs, adding \u201cwe must not elevate the wellbeing of illegal migrants above those of the British people\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cAccommodation for migrants should meet their essential living needs and nothing more, because we cannot risk becoming a magnet for the millions of people who are displaced and seeking better economic prospects,\u201d the minister said.<\/p>\n
But the plans face opposition from charities, who branded the accommodation \u201cgrossly inadequate\u201d, and the Labour Party, whose shadow interior minister Yvette Cooper called the proposals an \u201cadmission of failure\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u2013 \u2018Entirely unsuitable\u2019 \u2013
\nThe government also appears set to encounter legal challenges on using the airfields from local councils run by their own Conservative party.<\/p>\n
The use of ferries and barges appears to be further into the future as none have been purchased yet, with a government source saying those plans were part of the \u201cdirection of travel\u201d.<\/p>\n
Deputy Prime Minister Dominic Raab on Wednesday called barges \u201cone possible option\u201d, telling Sky News that the prospect of hotel accommodation was a \u201cperverse incentive\u201d to make the dangerous Channel crossing.<\/p>\n
The Refugee Council said it was \u201cdeeply concerned\u201d by the plans, calling the proposed accommodation \u201centirely unsuitable\u201d.<\/p>\n
\u201cThese sites are wholly inadequate places to house vulnerable men, women and children who have come to our country in search of safety,\u201d said Enver Solomon, the charity\u2019s chief executive.<\/p>\n
\u201cWe must ensure that people fleeing war, conflict and persecution can access safe, dignified, and appropriate accommodation while in the UK asylum system.\u201d<\/p>\n
Amnesty International UK\u2019s Steve Valdez-Symonds said that asylum seekers \u201cshould be treated with basic human dignity, not corralled on barges or other grossly inadequate and isolated accommodation\u201d.<\/p>\n
