{"id":259039,"date":"2023-03-30T13:15:33","date_gmt":"2023-03-30T12:15:33","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=259039"},"modified":"2023-03-30T13:15:33","modified_gmt":"2023-03-30T12:15:33","slug":"alleged-manslaughter-court-grants-chrisland-principal-others-bail","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/30\/alleged-manslaughter-court-grants-chrisland-principal-others-bail\/","title":{"rendered":"Alleged manslaughter: Court grants Chrisland principal, others bail"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>An Ikeja High Court on Thursday granted bail to four Chrisland School Ikeja staff members for the alleged involuntary manslaughter of Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student.<\/p>\n<p>Ademoye Adewale, Kuku Fatai, Belinda Amao, and Nwatu Victoria were charged with involuntary manslaughter and reckless negligent acts by the Lagos State Government.<\/p>\n<p>The defendants, on the other hand, pleaded not guilty to the charge.<\/p>\n<p>According to the News Agency of Nigeria, Justice Oyindamola Ogala granted the defendants&#8217; bail after defence counsel filed motions for bail on March 28 and March 29, respectively.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution, led by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2022\/05\/10\/broadcaster-arraigned-for-sharing-sex-video-of-chrisland-student\/\">Lagos State Attorney-General and Commissioner for Justice<\/a>, Mr Moyosore Onigbanjo, SAN, raised no objections.<\/p>\n<p>Ogala admitted the first and second defendants to N10 million bail each with two sureties each in like sum<\/p>\n<p>She also admitted the third and the fourth defendants to N20 million bail each with two sureties each in like sum.<\/p>\n<p>The judge said all the sureties must be gainfully employed, have credible and verified evidence of their financial status and reside within the court\u2019s jurisdiction.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cAll the sureties must have two years\u2019 tax payment to the Lagos State Government and must submit their international passports with the Chief registrar of the state high court,\u201d Ogala said.<\/p>\n<p>The court, however, ordered the defence counsel to write an undertaken for the defendants to be released to them before the perfection of their bail.<\/p>\n<p>The defence counsels were Mrs Bimpe Ajegbomojon (first defendant), Richard Ahonarougho SAN second defendant), Olukayode Enitan, SAN, ( third defendant), Ademola Animashaun (fourth defendant) and Mr Bolaji Ayorinde, SAN, (fifth defendant) while Mrs Oluwatodimu Ige held brief for the family of the deceased.<\/p>\n<p>The five defence counsels urged the court to grant bail to the defendants on self-recognisance.<\/p>\n<p>NAN reports that according to the charge information signed by the Director of Public Prosecutions, Dr Babajide Martins, on March 24, the defendants allegedly committed the offence on February 9, about 1. 00 p.m. in Agege Sports Stadium, Agege, Lagos.<\/p>\n<p>The prosecution said that the defendants negligently killed Adeniran by not ensuring her safety.<\/p>\n<p>The state also submitted that the defendants acted recklessly and negligently that endangered human life.<\/p>\n<p>Onigbanjo, while arraigning the defendants, informed the court that the state would be presenting 17 witnesses against the defendants.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cWe shall be praying for a date to open trial,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>According to the prosecution, the alleged offence contravened Sections 224 and 251 of the Criminal Laws of Lagos State, 2015.<\/p>\n<p>Ogala subsequently adjourned the case until May 25 for the commencement of trial.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>An Ikeja High Court on Thursday granted bail to four Chrisland School Ikeja staff members for the alleged involuntary manslaughter of Whitney Adeniran, a 12-year-old student.
