Nobel laureate Prof. Wole Soyinka has explained why he did not endorse any candidate in the 2023 elections.<\/p>\n

Soyinka<\/a> made this known in an interview on Channels Television\u2019s Roadmap 2023 on Monday.<\/p>\n

The Nobel laureate described the 2023 elections as \u201cnot exactly the most edifying exercise that we\u2019ve been through.\u201d<\/p>\n

He said, \u201cOn arriving, I came in for the World Poetry Day, and immediately, I was bombarded by the most horrendous narratives both pre and after the elections.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cSince then, I\u2019ve also read columns; I\u2019ve seen Nigerian papers for the first time in months and I didn\u2019t like what I read at all.<\/p>\n

\u201cMy trust has broken down completely and even the minimum restraint that we\u2019ve learnt to expect from seasoned politicians have been jettisoned completely.\u201d<\/p>\n

Soyinka noted that he preferred not to make comments on the electoral process as he was away, though he says it does not mean he was ignorant of what was happening on the home front.<\/p>\n

He said the nation was moving towards a situation, which was not planned, but one that happened fortuitously where the existing mould was going to be broken.<\/p>\n

\u201cAnd the signs were there that there would be die-hard opposition to the breaking of that mould,\u201d he said. \u201cElections should be keenly contested. But I still believe very much in what I call the Fashola Dictum,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n

Soyinka quoted the Minister of Works and Housing, Babatunde Fashola as once saying elections should be like festivals.<\/p>\n

The elder statesman said, \u201cThey should be yet another aspect of the festive spirit of humanity \u2013 and this was anything but festive.\u201d<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"
