Prof Wole Soyinka, a Nobel laureate, has been dragged on social media after expressing displeasure with a statement made by the Labour Party’s vice-presidential candidate, Datti Baba-Ahmed.<\/p>\n

Baba-Ahmed, whose ticket with his principal, Peter Obi, finished third in the February 25 presidential election, had used “fascistic language” about the Supreme Court, according to Soyinka.<\/p>\n

\u201cI denounced the menacing utterances of a vice-presidential aspirant as unbecoming<\/a>. It was a gladiatorial challenge directed at the judiciary and, by implication, the rest of the democratic polity,\u201d Soyinka said in an interview with Channels Television.<\/p>\n

Baba-Ahmed and Obi are currently contesting the election won by President-elect Bola Tinubu, as declared by the Independent National Electoral Commission, before the presidential election petition tribunal.<\/p>\n

In the interview, Soyinka revealed that he had warned Obi that if he lost the presidential election, it would be due to the attitude of his supporters.<\/p>\n

However, the Nobel laureate’s remark drew criticism from Obi’s supporters, known as Obidients, who took to Twitter to express their displeasure.<\/p>\n

One Twitter user, @ucheinspires, accused the Nobel laureate of having a personal relationship with Tinubu\u2019s family, saying, \u201cIt will not be surprising to me if he goes after anyone perceived to be against his dearly beloved friend and brother Tinubu.\u201d<\/p>\n

On his part, @iangobo, said, \u201cGrandpa Soyinka must have been brought back home to lend Tinubu his voice as a beneficiary of Tinubu\u2019s largesse. I didn\u2019t expect anything less from him.\u201d<\/p>\n

Another user, @BishopPOEvang, described Soyinka as \u201cthe man who promised to tear his US green card if Trump won and never did.\u201d<\/p>\n

But defending Soyinka, the candidate of the Young Progressives Party in the 2019 presidential election, Kingsley Moghalu, said the Nobel laureate would survive his critics.<\/p>\n

He tweeted, \u201cNobel Laureate Wole Soyinka is a principled fighter for justice in our country and around the world. He is a phenomenon that unlettered and uncultured people may not fully understand in an age of lazy social media in which many don\u2019t read or think deep. He survived dictators. He will survive you.\u201d<\/p>\n

Moghalu was immediately dragged on Twitter where his post garnered over 4,000 comments, mostly from critics.<\/p>\n

One @Polsaph said, \u201cJealousy! You wish you were Peter Obi, right?\u201d While @OjiUgo_nwa said, \u201cSo, because he endorsed your candidacy in 2019 he\u2019s above criticism?
