Jeffrey Keene, a high school teacher in Florida, United States, has been fired after he assigned students to write their own obituaries ahead of an active shooter drill.<\/p>\n

The Orange County School District said in a statement seen by news media that \u201ca teacher gave an inappropriate assignment about school violence\u2026 (and) has been terminated.\u201d It provided no further detail.<\/p>\n

Keene, a veteran teacher<\/a> who was hired at Dr. Phillips High School in Orlando in January, told a local Fox subsidiary that he was dismissed without explanation.<\/p>\n

An apparent copy of the assignment posted by Keene on Facebook shows that he had asked his upper-grade students to imagine, as part of a psychology lesson, that \u201ctoday was your \u2018last day\u2019 alive\u201d and write their own death notices.<\/p>\n

He further asked students to think about \u201cwhy the United States is having so many mass shootings,\u201d and to consider \u201cwhat kind of \u2018positive actions\u2019 can we\u2026 take to \u2018decrease the number of mass shootings<\/a>?’\u201d<\/p>\n

A disclaimer at the bottom of the assignment says it is in \u201cno way\u201d intended to upset anyone, though Keene said some students apparently complained to school counselors.<\/p>\n

63-year-old Keene told Fox that his challenge to students was to \u201cget rid of all the fluff and show them what\u2019s important in the world.\u201d<\/p>\n

\u201cIf you can\u2019t talk real to (the students), then what\u2019s happening in this environment?\u201d Keene asked. \u201cIn my mind, I\u2019ve done nothing wrong.\u201d<\/p>\n

He told Fox that he planned to appeal the decision, though as a probationary teacher not yet a member of the teachers\u2019 union he has less leverage to do so.<\/p>\n

Orlando was the site of one of the country\u2019s deadliest mass shootings \u2014 the June 2016 assault by a 29-year-old gunman at the Pulse nightclub that killed 49 people.<\/p>\n

One of the worst US school shootings occurred a few hours\u2019 drive south, in the Miami suburb of Parkland, when a 19-year-old shooter killed 17 people in 2018.<\/p>\n
