The National Population Commission (NPC) has said the Indigenous People of Biafra (IPOB) will not be a threat to the 2023 national population and housing census.<\/p>\n

The NPC Federal Commissioner in Enugu State, Ejike Eze, gave the assurance on Sunday that said IPOB had sufficiently understood the need to allow residents to participate in the exercise to make it successful as doing otherwise would not help its cause.<\/p>\n

WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that the Federal Government had announced that the 2023 National Population and Housing Census<\/a>\u00a0exercise will hold between May 3 and May 5.<\/p>\n

While IPOB has asked Igbos residing outside the South-East region to return to their respective home states<\/a> for the 2023 national census slated for May.<\/p>\n

Eze noted that the NPC had encounters with IPOB in two local government areas of Enugu State during the demarcation of the areas preparatory to the headcount, but the intervention by the government resolved the issues.<\/p>\n

\u201cIPOB has on its own embarked on advocacy to encourage people to participate in the census.<\/p>\n

\u201cWe have been able to engage IPOB to convince it that its agitation requires information that the census would provide,\u2019\u2019 Eze said.<\/p>\n

He dismissed calls for a shift in the dates of the exercise and argued that census is not the same as election where there are competitors, winners and losers.<\/p>\n

Eze also dismissed claims that the N869 billion budgeted for the exercise was exorbitant and said it was the least when compared with the budgets of other countries.<\/p>\n

\u201cThe U.S.A. spent between 12 dollars and 15 dollars (N5,760 \u2013N7,200) to count a citizen, while Malawi spent nine dollars (N4,320) per citizen.<\/p>\n
