{"id":263181,"date":"2023-04-18T04:33:47","date_gmt":"2023-04-18T03:33:47","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=263181"},"modified":"2023-04-18T04:33:47","modified_gmt":"2023-04-18T03:33:47","slug":"2023-elections-how-i-benefited-from-bvas-cash-crunch-abaribe","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/04\/18\/2023-elections-how-i-benefited-from-bvas-cash-crunch-abaribe\/","title":{"rendered":"2023 Elections: How I benefited from BVAS, cash crunch &#8211; Abaribe"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>Former Senate Minority leader, Senator Enyinnaya Harcourt Abaribe, Monday, said that he benefited from the introduction of the Bimodal Voter Accreditation System, BVAS and the cash crunch occasioned by the cashless policy during the February 25 presidential and national assembly elections.<\/p>\n<p>Abaribe said that he benefited from the BVAS because his opponents could not manufacture results.<\/p>\n<p>He added that the introduction of the cashless policy and its attendant cash scarcity during the presidential election made it impossible for the money bags to have cash for vote buying.<\/p>\n<p>The former Abia State Deputy Governor stated these while speaking at a two-day seminar organised by Media Educational Development Initiative for Africa with the theme, \u201cPeace Journalism and Consolidation of Democracy in Nigeria,\u201d for a select few journalists in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>WITHIN NIGERIA recalls that <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/01\/2023-elections-abaribe-edges-out-lps-candidate-to-retain-abia-south-senatorial-seat\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">Senator Abaribe won the Abia South Senatorial District election<\/a> on the platform of the All Progressive Grand Alliance, APGA, after the Peoples Democratic Party, PDP, had denied him the ticket.<\/p>\n<p>He, however, thanked God that he was able to survive the Obi-Datti tsunami in the southeast that has retired some politicians, adding that his victory was a result of people\u2019s goodwill.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cI benefited from <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/04\/03\/2023-election-bvas-deceived-me-gov-ikpeazu\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">BVAS<\/a>. The technology was right, the only issue is that we have to eliminate human interference.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Commenting on peace journalism in the country, he said, \u201cOn peace journalism, I still think maybe those of us that are politicians are people that need this seminar more than journalists. You don\u2019t tell journalists not to do their job.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>Senator Ababribe said that the country needs to improve on her recruitment process.<\/p>\n<p>He explained that if those contesting elections have some modicum of integrity, it will reduce negative reports which are usually sponsored by political opponents.<\/p>\n<p>He noted with dismay that in Nigerian politics, people don\u2019t normally vote for the best candidate rather they go for other considerations that make competence and the ability to deliver take the back seat.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cGod saved me otherwise I would have fallen victim to Obi-Datti wave. It is also good for Nigeria that people can win elections on the basis of BVAS,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>He said that the presidential election in terms of voting was good but after the voting, there was a problem in that the electoral body did not immediately transmit the results at the polling units from the BVAS to the iRev.<\/p>\n<p>Apparently referring to the unfolding drama in the Adamawa State Governorship election, Abaribe said, \u201cThe biggest problem we have as a country Nigeria is the fact that bad behaviour is not punished.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cImpunity thrives because you don\u2019t pay for it.
