{"id":265983,"date":"2023-05-01T15:09:42","date_gmt":"2023-05-01T14:09:42","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=265983"},"modified":"2023-05-01T15:09:42","modified_gmt":"2023-05-01T14:09:42","slug":"may-day-why-workers-resent-obeying-laws-in-nigeria-ngige","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/01\/may-day-why-workers-resent-obeying-laws-in-nigeria-ngige\/","title":{"rendered":"May Day: Why workers resent obeying laws in Nigeria \u2013 Ngige"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/01\/they-feel-entitled-fg-slams-resident-doctors-over-strike-threat\/\">Chris Ngige<\/a>, has disclosed why workers do not like to obey laws in Nigeria. <\/p>\n<p>Recall that the Minister was heavily criticised recently for withholding salaries of members of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU, during their eight months strike, which are yet to be paid.<\/p>\n<p>Health workers under the umbrella of the Nigeria Medical Association experienced same when they embarked on a four months strike, their salaries were never paid for the duration of the strike.<\/p>\n<p>Speaking on Labour laws among other issues on Arise Television\u2019s Morning Show program, Ngige claimed that Nigerians don\u2019t like to obey laws.<\/p>\n<p>His statement comes on the heels of Nigerian workers commemoration of the\u201cMay Day\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Ngige said, \u201cPeople in Nigeria don\u2019t like to obey laws. The statutes are there. The laws of the country are there. If you even try to enforce the law, you look odd. I am an odd today because I enforced Section 43 of the Trade Dispute Act, which says that if a worker withdraws his services, he will not be entitled to any pay; that\u2019s the right to go on strike. It\u2019s allowed, you can go on strike.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cBut your employer has the right to keep that money that is due to you, and if you\u2019re on essential services employ people to keep the services running. It\u2019s in the ILO statute books and principles on strike,\u201d he added.<\/p>\n<p>Meanwhile, the Minister said he has become an \u201codd man\u201d in the country because he wanted to enforce the Section 43 of the Trade Dispute Act, which denies worker entitlement to salary if he withdraws his services<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The Minister of Labour and Employment, Senator Chris Ngige, has disclosed why workers do not like to obey laws in Nigeria.
