{"id":266715,"date":"2023-05-04T21:03:25","date_gmt":"2023-05-04T20:03:25","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=266715"},"modified":"2023-05-04T21:03:25","modified_gmt":"2023-05-04T20:03:25","slug":"court-adjourns-ex-jamb-registrar-trial-fixes-new-date","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/04\/court-adjourns-ex-jamb-registrar-trial-fixes-new-date\/","title":{"rendered":"Court Adjourns Ex-JAMB Registrar Trial, Fixes New Date"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The trial of Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has been rescheduled for June 20, 2023 by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of a Federal High Court in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>The judge postponed the hearing so that the Independent Corrupt Practices and additional Related Offenses Commission (ICPC) could prepare for the testimony of additional witnesses it had scheduled. The Thursday adjournment came as a result of an oral request made by Ebenezer Shogunle, the attorney for the ICPC.<\/p>\n<p>When the issue came up, Ojerinde&#8217;s attorney, Eteya Ogana, notified the court that a motion had been filed to contest the original arrest and request the court&#8217;s release of Ojerinde. He claimed that the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/04\/spv-scandal-efcc-icpc-seek-dismissal-of-keyamos-suit-against-atiku\/\">ICPC<\/a> had unlawfully re-arrested his client.<\/p>\n<p>However, Justice Egwuatu could not find the process in the court record as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/03\/24\/ex-jamb-registrar-three-sons-daughter-in-law-to-face-17-fresh-corruption-charges\/\">Ojerinde\u2019s<\/a> lawyer admitted that the mistake emanated from them.<\/p>\n<p>According to the council, \u201cWe erroneously used a wrong charge number in filing the motion. Instead of putting charge number: FHC\/ABJ\/CR\/97\/21 in the application, they erroneously wrote FHC\/ABJ\/CR\/74\/21 leading to a mixup in the filing\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>Responding, ICPC\u2019s lawyer said even if the application was in the court file, it had been overtaken by event, adding that, there was another application filed by the defendant seeking his release before Justice Inyang Ekwo of the same court, where Ojerinde is also standing trial with his children.<\/p>\n<p>Contrary to Ogana\u2019s submission, the ICPC lawyer insisted that the commission had the warrant to effect Ojerinde\u2019s re-arrest and prayed to the court for an adjournment to enable the commission to assemble the three remaining witnesses lined up to testify in the trial.<\/p>\n<p>Four ICPC witnesses had already testified in the money laundering charge preferred against the former JAMB boss.<\/p>\n<p>One of the witnesses is the late Dr Jimoh Olabisi, who died on April 16.<\/p>\n<p>Olabisi said to be the key witness, was Ojerinde\u2019s kinsman and trusted confidant, who served as the deputy director of Finance in JAMB while Ojerinde was in office.<\/p>\n<p>ICPC had, on July 8, 2021, arraigned the former JAMB registrar on an 18-count charge bordering on diversion of public funds to the tune of N5 billion, an offence he allegedly committed during his tenure as registrar of the National Examinations Council (NECO) and JAMB.<\/p>\n<p>Ojerinde pleaded not guilty to all the charges and was later admitted to bail in the sum of N200 million, but, operatives of the ICPC, in January this year, re-arrested him within the court premises shortly after the proceedings, upon the discovery of fresh facts.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>The trial of Prof. Dibu Ojerinde, the former Registrar of the Joint Admissions and Matriculation Board (JAMB), has been rescheduled for June 20, 2023 by Justice Obiora Egwuatu of a Federal High Court in Abuja.
