{"id":266869,"date":"2023-05-05T16:26:19","date_gmt":"2023-05-05T15:26:19","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=266869"},"modified":"2023-05-05T19:34:42","modified_gmt":"2023-05-05T18:34:42","slug":"organ-trafficking-how-ekweremadu-others-lured-me-to-uk-victim","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/05\/organ-trafficking-how-ekweremadu-others-lured-me-to-uk-victim\/","title":{"rendered":"Organ-trafficking: How Ekweremadu, others lured me to UK \u2013 Victim"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The victim in the centre of former Deputy Senate President of Nigeria, Ike Ekweremadu\u2019s organ trafficking ordeal has disclosed that he was hoodwinked into traveling to the United Kingdom. <\/p>\n<p>The victim said he would not have agreed to the travel plan if he knew those behind it had ulterior and sinister motive for him, adding that his body is \u201cnot for sale\u201d.<\/p>\n<p>A United Kingdom court on Friday sentenced Ekweremadu to a total of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/05\/breaking-organ-trafficking-ekweremadu-sentenced-to-10-years-imprisonment-in-uk\/\">nine years and eight months imprisonment,<\/a> and his wife, Beatrice, was sentenced to four years and six months imprisonment for plotting to harvest a man\u2019s kidney.<\/p>\n<p>The third accomplice, a medical doctor, Dr Obinna Obeta, was sentenced to 10 years imprisonment.<\/p>\n<p>Ekweremadu, his wife and Obeta were found guilty at the Old Bailey of conspiring to arrange the travel of the victim, a young man, with a view to exploiting him for his body part.<\/p>\n<p>But the victim, whose name is not revealed because of legal reasons, claimed he was lured to the United Kingdom under the guise of job opportunity in the country.<\/p>\n<p>The victim said this in his impact statement which was read in court on Friday, Independence UK reports.<\/p>\n<p>In the statement, the victim revealed his humble background in a Lagos village where he said he is the oldest of seven siblings living in a home without electricity or running water.<\/p>\n<p>He was forced to become a street trader full time moving to the city to provide for his family when his father fell ill with a heart problem. He sold mobile phone accessories from a wheelbarrow making at most \u00a37 a day and as little as 50p, the report added.<\/p>\n<p>He said he was approached with an opportunity to work in the UK, something he had \u201calways dreamed of but never thought would happen.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>However, he said he was shocked to discover the reason for the trip was to harvest his organs to give to Ekweremadu\u2019s daughter, Sonia.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cHe [Dr Obinna Obeta] did not tell me he brought me here for this reason, he did not tell me anything about this. I would have not agreed to any of this, my body is not for sale,\u201d the victim said.<\/p>\n<p>He added that he could not return to Nigeria because he worries for his safety. The victim claimed someone visited his father in Nigeria and asked him to get the victim, his son, to drop the case.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI worry for my safety in Nigeria; those people can do anything.
