{"id":26760,"date":"2021-04-27T19:03:01","date_gmt":"2021-04-27T18:03:01","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=26760"},"modified":"2021-04-27T19:03:01","modified_gmt":"2021-04-27T18:03:01","slug":"man-jailed-20-years-for-setting-womans-home-and-car-on-fire-after-she-rejected-his-advances-in-us","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-20-years-for-setting-womans-home-and-car-on-fire-after-she-rejected-his-advances-in-us\/","title":{"rendered":"Man jailed 20 years for setting woman\u2019s home and car on fire after she rejected his advances in US"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after a jury convicted him of setting a woman\u2019s home and car on fire after she rejected his unwanted advances.<\/p>\n<p>Jerel Jay Wilson of Union City, Georgia was found guilty of simple battery and first- and second-degree arson in the attacks, which began September 11, 2018, officials said.<\/p>\n<p>According to Cobb prosecutors, Wilson broke into the woman\u2019s apartment, <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/01\/man-who-allegedly-burnt-his-girlfriends-son-to-death-pleads-guilty\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">burned<\/a> her bedroom, followed her and physically attacked her after she spurned his advances.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn 2018, jealousy and rejection left a path of destruction,\u201d Assistant District Attorney Jared Horowitz, who prosecuted the case, said in a statement.<\/p>\n<p>Authorities said on Sept. 10, Wilson had been texting the woman about her new <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/23\/aggrieved-pregnant-lady-sets-boyfriends-room-ablaze-in-benue\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">boyfriend<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p><img fetchpriority=\"high\" decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26776\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-2.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"1066\" height=\"600\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-2.jpg 1066w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-2-300x169.jpg 300w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-2-1024x576.jpg 1024w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-2-768x432.jpg 768w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 1066px) 100vw, 1066px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cOn the morning of the 11th, he texted her a picture of the Twin Towers on fire from the attacks on Sept. 11, 2001,\u201d Horowitz said.<\/p>\n<p>That same day, Wilson broke into the woman\u2019s apartment while she and her roommate were at work and started a fire in her bedroom, the district attorney said. Then, he stole her television, Horowitz said.<\/p>\n<p>The blaze left the woman\u2019s apartment entirely destroyed.<\/p>\n<p>Weeks later, the woman unintentionally dialed Wilson\u2019s number while she was driving a friend to the In Town Suites on Highlands Parkway, Horowitz said. After he received her call, Wilson drove there and attacked the woman, and set her car on fire.<\/p>\n<p><img decoding=\"async\" class=\"aligncenter size-full wp-image-26777\" src=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-3.jpg\" alt=\"\" width=\"700\" height=\"394\" srcset=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-3.jpg 700w, https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/wp-content\/uploads\/sites\/5\/2021\/04\/kunlenet07\/2021\/04\/27\/man-jailed-3-300x169.jpg 300w\" sizes=\"(max-width: 700px) 100vw, 700px\" \/><\/p>\n<p>\u201cIn both instances, security footage, the defendant\u2019s phone, and a GPS device on his vehicle placed him at the crime scenes at the time of the arsons,\u201d Horowitz said.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cInvestigators from the Smyrna Fire Marshal\u2019s Office also found a pawn ticket showing Wilson had pawned the stolen television on the same day it was stolen. The investigation further revealed that after the second fire, Wilson sent the woman a text saying, \u2018I apologize.\u2019\u201d<\/p>\n<p>A superior <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/14\/photos-court-sentences-25-year-old-nigerian-man-to-death-for-drug-trafficking-in-vietnam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">court<\/a> judge sentenced Wilson over the weekend, citing his \u201clack of concern and insight for his conduct.\u201d In addition to 20 years behind bars, Wilson will have to serve 10 years on probation and follow a permanent protective order prohibiting him from having any contact with the victim.<\/p>\n","protected":false},"excerpt":{"rendered":"<p>A 29-year-old man has been sentenced to 20 years in prison after a jury convicted him of setting a woman\u2019s home and car on fire after she rejected his unwanted advances.
