{"id":269197,"date":"2023-05-18T15:29:06","date_gmt":"2023-05-18T14:29:06","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=269197"},"modified":"2023-05-18T15:29:06","modified_gmt":"2023-05-18T14:29:06","slug":"governor-matawalle-under-probe-for-n70-billion-fraud-efcc","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/18\/governor-matawalle-under-probe-for-n70-billion-fraud-efcc\/","title":{"rendered":"Governor Matawalle under probe for N70 billion fraud \u2013 EFCC"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>The Economic and Financial Crimes Commission (EFCC) said on Thursday that Zamfara State Governor, Bello Matawalle, is being investigated over alleged diversion of N70 billion from the state treasury.<\/p>\n<p>Osita Nwajah, EFCC\u2019s Director of Public Affairs, made the disclosure at a press briefing at the commission\u2019s headquarters in Abuja.<\/p>\n<p>He said \u201cthe real issue with Matawalle is that he is being investigated by the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2023\/05\/18\/we-were-able-to-frustrate-the-efforts-of-some-politicians-because-of-the-naira-redesign-policy-efcc\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">EFCC<\/a>, over allegations of corruption, award of phantom contracts and diversion of over N70 billion.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The disclosure comes less than 24 hours after Mr Matawalle asked the EFCC chair,Abdulrasheed Bawa, to step down and allow the anti-graft agency to beam its searchlight on Nigeria\u2019s presidency officials and outgoing ministers.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cI demand that the EFCC chair extend similar invitations to officers of the Presidency and members of the Federal Executive Council, which is the highest tier of government in the country,\u201d Mr Matawalle had said.<\/p>\n<p>The Zamfara governor, who lost his re-election bid in March, will be leaving office when his tenure ends on 29 May.<\/p>\n<p>He will lose constitutional immunity that has shields him from prosecution as soon as he leaves office.<\/p>\n<p>Giving snippets of how Mr Matawalle allegedly siphoned the Zamfara\u2019s funds, Mr Nwajah said, \u201cThe money which was sourced as loan from an old generation bank purportedly for the execution of projects across the local government areas of the state, was allegedly diverted by the governor through proxies and contractors who received payment for contracts that were not executed.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He revealed that \u201cmore than 100 companies have received payments from the funds, with no evidence of service rendered to the state.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The EFCC official, who said the commission was under attacks from persons under investigations, further said that some of the contractors who had been invited and questioned over Mr Matawalle\u2019s alleged sleazy transactions, \u201cmade startling revelations on how they were allegedly compelled by the governor to return the funds received from the state coffers back to him through his aides after converting the same to United States dollars.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>The commission said the contractors \u201cconfirmed that they did not render any service to Zamafara State but were allegedly directed to convert the monies paid to them into United States Dollar and return to the State governor through some of his commissioners, notably the Commissioners in charge of Finance and Local Government Affairs.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>During the press briefing, Mr Nwajah referenced a popular Abuja property developer, whom he said \u201ccollected N6 billion on a N10 billion contract without rendering any service to Zamfara State.\u201d<\/p>\n<p>He said another contractor received over N3 billion for a contract for the supply of medical equipment but the commission traced a payment of N400 million from his account to a Bureau de Change operator.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe contractor confessed the payment was to procure the dollar equivalent allegedly for the state governor,\u201d Mr Nwajah said without disclosing the names of the contractors.<\/p>\n<p>The commission said it had recovered \u201cN300 million from a company, Fezel Nigeria Limited.
