{"id":27396,"date":"2021-04-29T04:49:35","date_gmt":"2021-04-29T03:49:35","guid":{"rendered":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/?p=27396"},"modified":"2021-04-29T04:49:35","modified_gmt":"2021-04-29T03:49:35","slug":"special-needs-boy-dies-after-drinking-kerosene-in-lagos","status":"publish","type":"post","link":"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/29\/special-needs-boy-dies-after-drinking-kerosene-in-lagos\/","title":{"rendered":"Special needs boy dies after drinking kerosene in Lagos"},"content":{"rendered":"<p>A special needs boy, identified simply as Kelvin, allegedly killed himself after drinking a substance suspected to be kerosene in the Ikeja area of Lagos State.<\/p>\n<p>It was gathered that the deceased obtained the bottle of <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/20\/woman-arrested-for-allegedly-slashing-daughter-with-razor-putting-pepper-in-the-wounds-in-bayelsa\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">kerosene<\/a> from the Jesus and Augusta Heritage pub located on Tonade Street in Ikeja.<\/p>\n<p>Kelvin was said to usually assist the owner, identified simply as Aunty Augusta, to clean tables that customers use whenever workers at the pub were not around, The PUNCH reports.<\/p>\n<p>According to shop owner in the area, who gave his name only as Johnson, said Kelvin volunteered to assist the owner of the pub in order to earn money for his upkeep due to lack of parental care, adding that the effect of the kerosene he allegedly consumed <a href=\"https:\/\/www.withinnigeria.com\/news\/2021\/04\/27\/woman-narrates-how-her-sister-was-killed-in-boko-haram-attack-in-geidam\/\" target=\"_blank\" rel=\"noopener\">killed<\/a> him.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe boy had special needs; it was when I got to the shop this morning (Wednesday) that I heard that he had died. But there is a woman, who owns a pub in the area and always takes care of children.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThis woman didn\u2019t employ the boy (Kelvin) to work for him, but because his parents were not taking care of him, at times he used to assist the woman when her workers were not around.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cYesterday (Tuesday), he saw a bottle with the content being kerosene, and he drank the kerosene. When people got to know, they quickly gave him palm oil and took care of him. He later stood up and was bathed,\u201d he said.<\/p>\n<p>Johnson, however, said that Kelvin\u2019s condition worsened the following day till he died, adding that people in the area had been blaming Augusta for his death.<\/p>\n<p>He said, \u201cHe was still okay yesterday and this morning he started behaving somehow and the next thing we heard was that he died. So, people started pointing accusing fingers at the woman.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe woman was just helping him; at times, the woman would give him money for transportation and feed him. The boy\u2019s name was Kelvin and the owner of the pub is Augusta.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cFrom what we gathered, it was the boy who drank the kerosene himself; the kerosene is what they usually use to clean the tables to chase away flies when customers patronise them. And the boy usually helped the woman to clean the tables with the substance.<\/p>\n<p>\u201cThe kerosene was kept somewhere and I don\u2019t know what influenced him to drink it.
